Title: Guide to the Alan Silver Papers 1934-1987

The Alan Silver Papers, 1934-1987 comprise the private collection of Rutgers alumnus Alan Silver, relating to his involvement in the Bergel/Hauptmann affair of the 1930's. Silver, a Rutgers student from 1931 to 1935, was instrumental in the formation of the Special Trustees Committee to Investigate the Charges of Lienhard Bergel. This case, involving the alleged firing of a New Jersey College for Women professor for anti-Nazi symapthies, raised doubts about the political alignment of some Rutgers administrative officials. Silver helped to bring nationwide attention to the affair, and succeeded in having the case reopened 50 years later. The files are arranged in a single series, Papers 1934-1987.

There are curricular proposals, personnel issues and evaluations of faculty/staff, discussions and dissemination of policies and procedures, and many other topics that were of concern to the Douglass College Dean's Office.

The Alan Silver Papers consist of nineteen file folders and one photograph taken by Sylvia Bergel. All relate to the Bergel/Hauptman case of 1935 and the subsequent re-investigation that was undertaken because of Silver's renewed investigation of the issue in 1986. The papers are a collection of the personal correspondence of Alan Silver, Sylvia Bergel and Lienhard Bergel; unpublished manuscripts written by Silver; interviews with Alan Silver, Lienhard Bergel, Dean Albert Meder, and Emil Jordan (the faculty member of the German Department that was promoted instead of Bergel); and a vast number of government documents pertaining to Bergel and Hauptman from the late 1930's to the early 1940's.

Papers of Pamela Spence Richards, Professor of Library Studies at Rutgers University from 1977 until her death in 1999. The collection consists of publications, reports, reprints of published materials, and correspondence. The papers also document Pamela Richards’ service to Rutgers University as chair of the Library and Information Science (LIS) Search Committee, the LIS Scholarship Committee, the LIS Budget Committee and the Curriculum Committee. Works and papers in the collection representative of Professor Richards’ service to the scholarly community at large, include records from the boards and committees of the more than fifteen professional associations on which she served; more than twenty journal articles, including some in Russian, French and German; as well as numerous conference proceedings.

Dean A. Gallo was a realtor in Morris County, New Jersey. After serving successively in elective offices at the local, county and state levels, he was elected to Congress as a Republican to serve a district that was centered in Morris County. Winning re-election four times, Gallo served New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District from January 1985 through his death in November 1994. His Congressional papers (including audio-visual materials and some photographs) span the entire period that he was in office. The papers document Gallo’s activities, his positions on issues, his legislative actions and initiatives, his election campaigns, his Congressional travels, and, to a lesser extent, the activities of his Washington office. Among the topics represented are environmental protection, the continuation of Picatinny Arsenal as a functioning military base and the plight of Soviet Refusniks.

Title: Stephen S. Chang Papers, 1933-2001.

The Stephen S. Chang Papers consists of documents ranging in date from 1933 to 2001. The bulk of documents found in the collection were created from 1960 to 1988. There is a broad representation of formats in the collection. The most frequently occurring formats are typed documents including correspondence, meeting minutes and agendas, reports, letters, patents and financial/budget plans. Handwritten notes are also found in the collection in addition to newspaper articles, photographs, negatives, programs and brochures. Acetate transparency slides used with overhead projectors were also found in the collection. Due to the unstable nature of acetate these slides have been photocopied onto acid free paper. Diagrams for laboratories and building layouts are included in the collection as well as machinery blue prints. The bulk of these materials are written in English. About 20% of the collection is written in Mandarin Chinese and a few documents are in German.

Records generated by the Office of the Dean of Douglass College during the administrations of Margery Somers Foster, Paula P. Brownlee, and Jewel Plummer Cobb, 1965-1981. During this time period Rutgers University witnessed enormous change, much of which had an impact on Douglass College, including the move to turn the previous all-male Rutgers College into a coeducational unit of the university, student protests over civil rights and the Vietnam War, and a major reorganization of Rutgers that transformed Douglass College from an academic college to a residence college. The records vividly document the position of the Douglass College deans in reaction to this events.

The Rutgers Grass Roots - Progressive Activist Files comprise the records of Sue Kozel and Chris Berzinski, two student activists who came to Rutgers in the late 1970s and who continued their involvement in activism, both at Rutgers and in the larger community, after graduating from the University. Most of the files in the collection were created by Kozel and Berzinski as they became involved in a protest issue. The files in the "Academic Excellence/Standards - Defining a University", and the "General Subject Files" series were kept by Kozel and Berzinski for reference. The series "Kozel: Representative Student Activist" contains material generated by Sue Kozel in her day-to-day activities while the "Labor" series contains her Ph. D. (not completed) research material. This collection is comprised primarily of textual records such as broadsides, correspondence, legislation, minutes, newsletters, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, press releases, reports and resolutions. Material in other formats consists of a day book, oversize chart, and photographs. The records document the activities of Kozel and Berzinski as activists, and, in so doing, document the issues that concerned them, the people with whom they came into contact, including Louis Chandler, Rutgers Professor Emeritus and member of the Manhattan Project, and Edward J. Bloustein, Rutgers University President, and the groups in which they became active, for example, the Rutgers Coalition for Total Divestment (RCTD)/Coalition for Total Divestment and the Committee to Organize Student Workers (COSW).

Earle W. Clifford, Jr. came to Rutgers University in 1963 to serve as Dean of Student Affairs. In this position he was responsible for overseeing activities outside the classroom and had various offices reporting to him. From 1970 to 1972 he was Vice President of Student Affairs. Clifford was at Rutgers during a time in which many social and educational changes were taking place. This collection contains many of his professional papers, which contain his thoughts and reactions to the events of those times.
