Title:
Papers, 1934-1989.
Correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, scrapbooks, annual reports, manuscripts, photographs, journal articles, notebooks, address books and postcards assembled and generated, 1922-1989, during Joseph Lee's political career and participation in civic activism. Materials pertain to Lee's participation in the fight to save Boston's West End from demolition in the 1950s and 1960s (includes photographs ca. 1957 of West End prior to destruction) and his investigation of Boston's Cocoanut Grove Fire in 1942. His participation on the Boston School Committee during the 1930s to 1970s provides materials reflecting the challenges of the Committee during the 1960s with issues such as busing, integration and the creation of Metco. Materials also pertain to Lee's unsuccessful runs for mayor (1941 and 1945), Governor's Council (1940), Senate campaigns (1942, 1944) and the U.S. House of Representatives from the 11th District (1946). Lee's interest in recreation is strongly present in materials of the Boston Board of Recreation (which developed and supplied school playgrounds) and the Massachusetts Committee to Further Outdoor Recreation which he founded and chaired. Materials related to the Community Boating program, established by Lee in 1937, are also present in the collection. Also included are materials pertaining to Lee's manuscripts, "How to Sail a Boat," "American Manifesto," and "Smoulder a Patch."

Title:
Citywide Educational Coalition records, 1972-2001.
This collection documents the Citywide Educational Coalition, a grassroots educational reform organization, located in Boston, Massachusetts. The records illuminate its formation by Mary Ellen Smith, Hubert Jones, Francis Parkman, and Clyde Miller to choose a superintendent of the Boston Public Schools; its role in the desegregation of the Boston Public Schools; and its efforts to disseminate the policies and practices of the Boston School Committee and the Boston Public Schools in language that parents could understand. Also documented is the response of the anti-busing organization, Restore Our Alienated Rights (ROAR), to Judge W. Arthur Garrity's orders and the Coalition's collaboration with three court appointed councils. Meetings of the Boston School Committee and its standing committees, as well as programs offered in the Boston Public Schools and interviews conducted by the Coalition with parents, teachers, principals, and headmasters are documented. School reform; parent participation in education; school assignment and student choice; vocational, special, and early childhood education; community and parent organizing; and parent training projects are also documented. Records include meeting minutes and summaries, correspondence, questionnaires and surveys, statistics, newsletters, fact sheets, reports, proposals, grants and contracts, VHS and audio cassettes, and photographs.
