Collection, 1990 and undated, probably 20th century, includes: a wooden, ceremonial shield with the inscription "a la Central Michigan University de la Universidad Austral de Chile, Valdivia, Noviembre 1990," measuring 9 x 7 inches in a blue polyester case which measures 12 x 10 inches; a framed copy of "A view of the Butte Des Morts Treaty Ground with the arrival of the Commissioners Gov. Lewis Cass and Col. McKenney in 1827, Painted on the spot by J.O. Lewis, Lachman & Duval, Lith.rs, Philad.a," in a wooden frame with a blue mat, measuring 19 x 15 inches; "The Tourist Pocket Map of Michigan, Exhibiting its Internal Improvements, Roads, Distances, & c by J.H. Young, Philadelphia, published by S. Augustus Mitchell, 1839, and reproduced by Beurmann-Marshall Inc., Lansing, Michigan," in a silver frame measuring 21.5 x 24.5 inches, with blue, red, and gray mats; and an oversized blue folder entitled "Three pictorial theses of Olomouc University", including three allegorical drawings of the university, a modern, colored map of the Czech Republic, and descriptions of the drawings in English, German, and Czechoslovakian, with the card of Dr. Lumomir Dvorak, Rector of Palacky University in Olomouc. The Tourist Pocket Map is probably a copy. The Clarke does have an original of this map. The copy of the lithograph documents the treaty meeting of Cass and McKenney with the Winnebago and Menominee Indians in Winnebago County, Wis. The original of the lithograph is at the Wis. Historical Society.

Also Confederate bonds and money; Minor family legal papers; miscellaneous legal papers re Florida property and a proposed duel between Minor and Archibald Gillespie; copies of the wills of Robert "King" Carter and General John Minor; a memorandum, 1865 May 4, of the terms of surrender for Confederate naval forces at Mobile, Al.; and miscellaneous family papers. Topics include Minor's life and medical experiences, especially with yellow fever aboard the U.S.S. Mississippi during the Mexican War; a Mexican War pension for Eloise I. Minor; life aboard the U.S.S. Independence, the U.S.S.Brooklyn, and the U.S.S. Levant; cruises to the Mediterranean Sea; a yellow fever epidemic in Portsmouth, Va.; Reconstruction in Virginia and Alabama; Alabama land claims; and the case of Santiago Innerarity vs. Merchants National Bank re a sugar shipment.

Correspondence and papers dealing with treaties, agreements, and relations between the whites and the Choctaw and Creek Indians, including the exchange of prisoners, reparations for murders, inroads by whites and Indians, and compensation for stolen horses; establishment of post roads from Tennessee to the South Carolina border and to Natchez, Miss.; establishment of a trading post at Muscle Shoals, Ala.; and the establishment of the Indian Treaty Line from the Kentucky Trace to the Gaps of the Cumberland and along Campbell's line to the Clinch River, and the difficulties of the commissioners in deciding on this line. Among the correspondents are William Blount, Benjamin Hawkins, William McCleish, James McHenry, Samuel Mitchell, and James Robertson.

John Peace Collection MS 296., 1800-1973

Title: John Peace Collection 1800-1973

John Robert Peace, Jr. (1917-1974) was a Texas lawyer and public official. He served on the University of Texas Board of Regents from 1967-1973 (Chair, 1971-1973). He is credited with being a driving force in the establishment of the University of Texas at San Antonio. Peace also was an avid collector of Texana, and he amassed a collection of about 900 books and 500 manuscripts, some dating back to the 1700s. The manuscript of José Enrique de la Peña, popularly known as the De la Peña diary, first appeared publicly in 1955 under the title La Rebelión de Texas. The manuscript was edited and published by Jesús Sánchez Garza, a Mexico City antiquities dealer. The collection is comprised of materials collected by John R. Peace, Jr. Materials document Texas history, including the publication of the De la Peña diary (La Rebelión de Texas). Historical manuscripts comprise more than 350 documents--both original manuscripts and printed material--related to Texas history, concentrating on the periods before 1860. The Rebelión de Texas collection is comprised of original documents and typescripts, as well as copies of manuscript and typescript documents related to the publication of La Rebelión de Texas. The documents consist of historical manuscripts, copies and transcriptions of original documents, dated 1825-1840. Other documents, mostly undated but circa 1954, consist of letters, newspaper articles, transcriptions, drafts and notes probably created or used by Sánchez Garza for the publication.
