Nathaniel Sheafe Waldron was a Brevet Major in the United States Marines. His letter book dated October 4, 1831 to February 18, 1857, contains correspondence while stationed at Norfolk, Virginia, New York, Tampa, Boston, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Turk, William. Papers, 1744-1854.

Title: Papers, 1744-1854.

The papers relating to the naval service of Dr. William Turk consist of biographical data, his appointments and orders, correspondence, medical data, financial data, legal data, printed material, and miscellany. The bulk of the materials spans the years 1820 through 1854. Some of the earliest documents relate to Turk's education, his certification and licensing as a physician and surgeon, and his religious affiliations. There is also biographical data on his father, Ahasuerus Turk, and his son, John William Turk, who changed his surname to Livingston in 1843. Turk's appointment notices, his orders from the Department of the Navy, and the official correspondence document his naval service as a surgeon. His career with the U.S. Navy, beginning with the acceptance of his appointment on 21 July 1812 and continuing into the 1830s, provides an excellent insight into the administrative workings of the nineteenth century Navy.

Horner's life is documented through his diaries, correspondence, financial and official papers. The collection begins with schoolboy notes from Warrenton Academy, Fauquier County, and medical notebooks from studies at the University of Pennsylvania. In journals from his career as ship surgeon and eventually fleet surgeon he gives detailed accounts of voyages and ports visited, particularly in South America and the Caribbean, and supplements them with amateur sketches and maps. Of great interest are his medical reports as surgeon to the East Gulf Blockading Squadron including requisitions, receipts and sick reports. Among his naval papers are notes for an article on an 1862 yellow fever epidemic, reports as surgeon in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and correspondence regarding his book Medical topography of Brazil and Uruguay and regarding the selection of naval physicians by the Naval Board of Medical Examiners. Financial accounts, journals and correspondence with family, friends and farm tenants in his personal papers give an excellent account of life in Philadelphia and the family farm in Warrenton, Fauqier Co. where he eventually retired. Of great interest are a catalog of his library, descriptions of the building of a Catholic Church in Warrenton, and of a lynching in 1880, and duplicate minutes of the Fauquier County Historical Society, 1915-20.

This volume was kept by John M. Berrien, midshipman in the United States Navy. It contains a log of the U.S.S. Guerriere, commanded by John Smith and bearing the broad pennant of Commodore Charles C.B. Thompson. Entries were made between February 15 and June 19, 1829, as the ship sailed from the United States to Rio de Janeiro, Valparaiso, and Callao. The volume also contains a log of the U.S. frigate Brandywine, with entries from June 21-October 7, 1829, while the ship sailed from Callao and Rio de Janeiro to New York. The volume also includes a watercolor and a sketch of the Guerriere, as well as a sketch of the signal flags.

These logbooks (3 vols.) of the frigate Brandywine were kept from June 6, 1848-December 11, 1850. The Brandywine was the flagship of Commodore George W. Storer, and Charles Boarman was Captain. The logs are contemporary copies kept while the ship was stationed in the harbor of Rio de Janeiro and off Montevideo. Logs list officers on board and record weather conditions; routine occupations of the crew; gun practice; crew desertions; court martials; activities of other ships in the region, noting home ports and destinations. Logs contain occasion entries of William Talbot Truxtun until he left the ship on December 16, 1848 to report for duty on board the "Perry." Entry for January 25, 1850 notes receipt on board of a box containing the remains of Commodore George W. Rogers brought from Buenos Aires on board the "St. Louis," by order of the Secretary of the Navy, for relay to the United States. March 10, 1850 entry records transfer of the remains and tombstone to the "Lexington" for conveyance to the United States. The log ends with the return of the ship to Wallabout Bay, Brooklyn, New York.

This collection features the Civil War correspondence of George S. Geer to his wife from 1862 to 1866. Geer wrote the majority of these letters, while serving on board the U.S. Steam Battery USS Monitor. During that time, he wrote 82 letters to his wife describing events on board the ironclad. In his letters home, Geer writes of the Battle of Hampton Roads, the fall of Norfolk, the Peninsula Campaign, the flight of African American slaves and use of contrabands, and the refit of the Monitor at the Washington Navy Yard. More remarkably, his letters paint a detailed portrait of common events and everyday life on board the Monitor from her embarkation from New York in March 1862 to her sinking off the North Carolina coast on December 31, 1862. The collection contains 69 letters (primarily between members of the Brinley family and Edward Brinley, Jr.), 18 documents (largely relating the career of Edward Brinley, Jr.), a journal kept by Brinley on board the USS North Carolina, Oct. 1840-May. 1841, and the U.S.S. Delaware from Dec. 1843-Mar. 1844, and a portable wooden writing desk owned by Brinley. The early correspondence deals with Edward's childhood and education, his first naval appointment aboard the U.S.S. North Carolina including details about the various ports-of-call. His letters of the 1844-1845 period deal with his service on the U.S.S. Falmouth in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean during the prelude to the U.S.-Mexican War. Edward's letters of the 1846-1850 period deal with his service aboard the U.S.S. Preble during its cruise of the Pacific. Brinley's comments on the economic, ecological, and political phenomenon of the Pacific throughout these letters. The California gold rush, U.S. economic colonialism in present-day Hawaii, U.S. whaling in the Pacific, and the Chinese Opium trade are among the issues extensively discussed. His letters of 1856 were written during his service on the USS Potomac in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. They include discussions of the "filibusterer" William Walker's short-lived takeover of Nicaragua. The letters of Francis W. Brinley, Edward, Jr.'s most frequent correspondent, are dominated by family news and fatherly advice regarding the merits of hard work and respect for authority. Francis's letters do contain some interesting portraits of quotidian life as a businessman in Perth Amboy, NJ, however. The two letters of Thomas Brinley paint a dismal picture of his failed attempt at making a fortune in 1850s California. The remainder of the correspondence relates primarily to the everyday affairs of the Brinley family. The manuscripts and documents section contains primarily Federal and New Jersey government documents relating to the military and civil service of Edward Brinley, Jr., as well as various documents relating to Andrewetta Brinley's widow's pension. The journal of Edward Brinley, Jr. (HM 74073) contains details of nautical weather, crew discipline, and ship maintenance aboard the U.S.S. North Carolina during its stay in New York Harbor. The journal of the U.S.S. Delaware contained therein details the same during that vessel's cruise of the Mediterranean and trans-Atlantic journey back to Norfolk, VA. The back of the folio has a chart relating to nautical navigation. The final folder in the collection contains two documents included with the collection at the time of accession - one a family tree of the family of Francis W. Brinley (of unknown provenance) and an excerpt from the catalog of Michael Brown Rare Books that contains transcriptions of large sections of the letters of Edward Brinley, Jr. The collection also includes the portable wooden writing desk of Edward Brinley, Jr., which contains writing and nautical instruments, as well as a newspaper clipping which details how to make a homemade barometer.
