Governor of Massachusetts.
John Winthrop (1588-1649), a Puritan lawyer, one of the founders and the governor of the colony of Massachusetts. In March 1630, Winthrop began his journal that he kept until January 1649. By the early 1640s, the entries became more irregular and retrospective, and the narrative was more of a history than a personal journal. There were three volumes: the first covered the period from late March 1630 to September 1636, the second, to December 1644, and the third covered the period from September 17, 1644 to January 11, 1649. The manuscript was well recognized as an authoritative source for the history of New England; a number of scholars borrowed the manuscript for extended periods, among them William Hubbard, Cotton Mather, Thomas Prince, Ezra Stiles, Jonathan Trumbull, and Jeremy Belknap. The original manuscript of the second volume was accidentally destroyed in 1825.

Francis Higginson journal, 1629.
Journal of Rev. Francis Higginson, kept from 25 April - 25 June 1629. Title:
[Portrait Collection, 1630-1996.] [graphic].
The American Antiquarian Society's painted portrait, miniature and sculpture collection includes portraits of Society members, benefactors, and directors as well as portraits related to the manuscript and book collections. Some are by Worcester and Boston area artists; others by nationally recognized painters. The collection reflects the changing tastes in portraiture from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries and includes both academic and non-academic styles. The collection was begun by Isaiah Thomas as a supplemental collection to the library holdings, and in many respects, it retains that supporting role. There are portraits of book and alamanc publishers, poets and newpaper editors, as well as likenesses of artists and authors. Taken together, these pictures tell a part of the Society's story since its founding in 1812. The collection includes portraits of men, women and children. There are several portraits of Isaiah Thomas and his family, all of which are documented in the Thomas Family papers. There is an important group of five likenesses of the Mather family, including Cotton Mather, which were given to the society by decendants in 1815 after Isaiah Thomas purchased the Mather library. Portraits of Massachusetts politicians include a likeness of Massachusetts Bay Governor John Winthrop and Senators Edward Everett and Charles Sumner. Seventy-three artists are represented in the collection, including Salem painter Michele Felice Corné, Boston's Ethan Allen Greenwood and the miniature painter Eliza Goodridge. Regional artists like Zedekiah Belknap and William Willard are also included in the collection. The Society commissioned portraits of its librarians, directors and members from prominent New York and Boston painters such as Daniel Huntington and Edwin T. Billings. The collection also includes several self portraits, including a canvas by Mather Brown and another by the lithographer and painter Bass Otis.

Williams, Roger, 1604?-1683. Papers, 1629-1682.
Title:
Papers, 1629-1682.
This collection consists of photostatic copies of Williams' letters and papers, which span the period 1629 to 1682. The folio volume contains over 122 pieces and was compiled by the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Historical Societies in 1924. The original papers are in the possession of those and other institutions, such as the John Carter Brown Library and the Massachusetts Archives. Two original letters, owned by the American Antiquarian Society, are included in this collection and were photostated for the volume. In addition to Williams' letters, the indexed volume of copies also contains affidavits, public notices, and deeds and wills witnessed by him. Many letters were addressed to notable colonial figures, especially Williams' friends, John Winthrop (1587/88-1649), Governor of Massachusetts, and John Winthrop, Jr. (1605/06-1676), Governor of Connecticut. Other recipients included William Coddington (1601-1678), John Endecott (c. 1589-1665), John Cotton (1609-1676), and Thomas Hinckley (1618?-1705). During his visit to England in 1652, Williams wrote several letters to a friend, Anne Sadleir ( - ) of Trinity College, Cambridge, England, concerning his theological opinions. His letters to the Winthrops include: descriptions of the extensive services performed by him during the Pequot War, especially details of his prevention of a league between the Pequots and Narragansets; political and religious developments in their respective colonies; Williams' defense of his theological views; news from England concerning Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), the Protectorate, and foreign affairs in Europe; details of the outbreak of King Philip's War; and personal commentaries concerning the Williams and Winthrop families. The earliest letters, written in Essex, England, concern the rejection of Williams' marriage proposals to Jane Whalley ( - ) by her aunt Lady Barrington. Letters addressed to several adversaries, such as Coddington, Endecott, and George Fox (1624-1691), the Quaker leader, contain Williams' philosophies on politics, theology, and Indian affairs. One lengthy letter, written on 22 July 1670, provides much insight into Williams' view of his original banishment in 1634, as well as autobiographical accounts of subsequent events. Another letter addressed to the people of Rhode Island in 1663, constitutes a list of reasons why they should continue to provide financial support to Dr. John Clarke (1609-1676), then in England, to secure a new charter. A second copy of the letter is contained in the collection's folder, as well as a facsimile of a 1677 letter in which Williams defends himself against charges brought by William Harris ( - ) concerning inaccurate Providence boundary lines. One of the two original letters was written to John Winthrop, Jr., and refers to Williams' negotiations with the Narraganset Indians around the outbreak of King Philip's War. The other original letter was written to the elder Winthrop concerning events of the Pequot War in 1637.

Title:
Drawings collection 1773-1905.
The American Antiquarian Society's drawings collection consists mostly of genre scenes featuring everyday life, landscapes and portraits.
