Summary: Collection consists of official and personal papers of Governor Wallace. Reports include one report from Wallace to the Secretary of the Interior discussing New Mexico's economy, agriculture, education, minerals, and problems (1879) and a second report from Wallace to the Legislative Assembly (1880). Penal papers consist of pardons, commutations, reprieves, remissions of fines, requisitions for extraditions to and from New Mexico, and death warrants. Wallace's personal papers include letters written by Lew and Susan Wallace (1878- 1907), an article about Lew Wallace (1895-1926), sketches by Lew Wallace, a mining deed (1882), and five historical documents. Historical documents include two royal Spanish decrees and Wallace's translations of two reports concerning Bernardo de Castro's mining expedition.

The bulk of the collection contains Wallace's correspondence with his wife and son; business and professional letters; letters to Wallace and his family; and photographs. Topics include Wallace's military and civil service careers during the Civil War, as governor of New Mexico Territory, and as Minister to Turkey; and his involvement in Mexico (1865-1867). Wallace's speeches, notes, and notebooks deal with his publishing and lecture work; business interests in Crawfordsville and Indianapolis, Ind.; and the 1876 presidential election. The papers of Wallace's wife, Susan Elston Wallace, contain family correspondence and letters to her son from Europe, Turkey, and Egypt; correspondence with her publishers; and biographical writings, scrapbooks, and clippings about her husband. The letterbooks of son Henry Lane Wallace relate to family business, and a lawsuit regarding the theatrical production of BEN-HUR. Also included are the papers of Isaac C. Elston regarding business interests and the development of Michigan City, Ind.; and genealogical materials for the Wallace, Elston, and Test families. Visual items in this collection include original drawings and sketches by Wallace as well as family portraits and photographs; photos of Wallace's home and studio; Civil War photos of generals and the 11th Indiana Infantry; and photos from Turkey and Italy.

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Manuscripts include a section of "Ben Hur," a page of Wallace's autobiography, Act II of an untitled play for the Countess of Dufferin and Ava, poems and a quotation. Letters, written by Wallace and his wife Susan treat the Civil War, national affairs, politics, and travel. Most deal with Wallace's writings, royalties, and copyrights, and with translations and dramatic adaptations of "Ben Hur." Of interest are a letter to U.S. Grant asking him to comment on battle scenes in "The fair god," and an 1863 note to Edwin M. Stanton awaiting orders. A photograph of Wallace is included.

Women in New Mexico Collection

Title: Women in New Mexico Collection

In 1976 the Albuquerque chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) held an exhibit at The Albuquerque Museum to honor the contributions of women to the history, culture, and politics of New Mexico. The materials gathered by members of the AAUW in Albuquerque to determine which of the over one hundred women nominated were to be included in the exhibit form the core of this collection. The collection contains correspondence, forms, audio CDs, clippings, and published articles on the women nominated by AAUW members, including explanations of why they were nominated and biographical information on the nominees. All of the women were 19th and 20th century women who were not all New Mexico natives, but who lived here and contributed to the artistic, political, and educational life of the state. Ultimately, thirteen women were chosen for the exhibit. Biographical information, clippings, and recorded interviews with those women comprise folders 5-22. Folders 25-82 contain biographical information and clippings about fifty-six women who were nominated, but not included in the exhibit. The biographical folders are arranged in alphabetical order. Newspaper clippings and publicity for the 1976 exhibit are also included in the collection. The last folder in the collection has brief information about eighty women nominated by the New Mexico Women's Political Caucus as women of note in the 1980s. Other biographical materials on New Mexico women may be added to this collection in the future.

The collection consists of the papers of Maurice Thompson, his wife, Alice Lee Thompson, their daughter Jessie T. Ballard, and Maurice's brother Will Thompson from 1865-1940. The collection includes manuscripts, correspondence and family papers, clippings, sketches, photographs and negatives, memorabilia, printer proofs, printed extracts, and scrapbooks. The manuscripts include short stories, book-length stories, nature sketches and wild-life stories, essays, articles, lectures, and poetry. Photographs depict family and literary figures. The correspondence pertains to Thompson's writing and publishing and includes many letters from other authors. The collection also includes extracts from magazines, clippings from newspapers, and printers' proofs of some of Thompson's works; family correspondence and papers; and a number of pencil, ink, and crayon sketches made by Maurice and by his wife Alice; scrapbooks and of papers of other members of the Thompson family. One broadside of a Civil War poem is by Will Thompson; a few other poems by Will Thompson are included in the collection. Two family Bibles containing family records are also part of these papers. There is also a positive microfilm of Maurice Thompson: a biographical and critical study by Otis B. Wheeler, University of Minnesota Press, 1951. The papers of Jesse Ballard, a journalist with the Atlanta Journal Magazine, includes correspondence, clippings of her published articles, accounts books, a journal (1889), manuscripts of her stories, and a scrapbook and biographical notes about her father, Maurice Thompson.
