General George Stillman was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut, in 1751. He defended the coast of Maine from British attack during the American Revolution. He died in Machias, Maine, in 1799. Stillman's papers include his diary (1775-1776), which records incidents following the capture of the British sloop Margaretta; a service certificate signed by Major General Charles Lee; letters and orders from Colonel and Indian agent John Allan; commissions signed by John Hancock, Jeremiah Powell, T. Cushing, Samuel Adams, and Moses Gill respectively for Stillman's rank in the militia from Major to Brigadier General; and a certificate signed by Paul Revere and other officers of St. Andrew's Lodge, Boston, certifying that George Stillman is a Master Mason (1788).

The document refers the case to the New Jersey Supreme Court. Signed by Joseph [?] Bloomfield, state attorney general, David Brearley, chief justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, and Gloucester County Court of Appeals judges John Wilkins, Joseph Hugg, John Sparks, and Robert Brown.

John Hancock papers, 1753-1783

Title: John Hancock papers 1753-1783

Collection consists of correspondence, speeches, and documents signed by Hancock in his capacity as president of the Continental Congress and governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Letters are largely outgoing and most pertain to his official duties in the Continental Congress, including several letters to Col. Jeremiah Powell in the days leading up to the Battle of Rhode Island, expressing great distress at the desertion of the French fleet under Admiral d'Estaing. Several bills and accounts dating between 1753 and 1771 relate to the building and fitting out of ships for Hancock during his mercantile career. One oversize folder contains a letter dated October 17th, 1777 pertaining to an order to send more clothes to the troops, and references enclosures from General Washington so convincing that the Assembly would see that "the troops are in the greatest distress, and likely to suffer still more from the indemnity of the approaching season," though the enclosures are not present

Papers of Solomon Lovell relate to his command of the American land forces during the Penobscot (Maine) Expedition of the Revolutionary War (1779). The collection contains a volume of correspondence with Lovell regarding the troops and reinforcements, Indian forces, orders, provisions, reports on the status of the campaign to oust the British from Penobscot, and its aftermath following its failure. Also, a letterbook containing copies of official letters to Lovell and drafts from him, a journal and an orderly book of the 74th and 82nd British regiments kept by [William?] Lawrence at Castine (Me.), and a document on the "State of facts respecting the Penobscot Expedition" by William Todd. Correspondents include John Allan, Dudley Saltonstall, Jeremiah Powell, John Avery, and Samuel W. Cobb.
