Records, 1893-1931, of the Mayflower Club of Boston, Mass., a private women's club founded in 1893 to provide a place in a central location in Boston where members could find comfortable rooms, a place for reading and writing, and a restaurant for lunch. The records include correspondence with other clubs and regarding notifications, resignations, and nominations for membership; papers related to the leasing and upkeep of the facilities; reports of the secretary, Board of Government, and President; membership lists and records; printed leaflets of officers and rules; a visitors' sign-in book (1895); and records related to the club's incorporation in 1924. Corresponding officers of the club include Jennie L. Motley, Lucy Lowell, Katharine P. Loring, and Elizabeth Cabot. Among the individuals with single letters in the collection are Helen H. Taft, Edward E. Hale, Charles W. Eliot, Frederick H. Gillett, and Lois L. Howe.

The firm of Howe, Manning & Almy is believed to be the first architectural firm in Boston founded by women and the second in the United States. Lois Lilley Howe (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, SB 1890), whose commissions began in 1894, established her own firm in 1900 and asked Eleanor Manning (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, SB 1906), one of her draftsmen, to be her partner in 1913, creating the firm of Lois Lilley Howe & Manning. In 1926, another draftsman from the office, Mary Almy (Radcliffe College, 1905, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, SB 1922) became a partner, assuming responsibility for the business aspects of the firm. Manning focused on the technical architectural work and design problems, and Howe continued to concentrate on design. The firm dissolved in 1937 when Howe retired, and Manning and Almy started separate practices. The emphasis of the firm was on domestic architecture and the partners did both building and remodeling. They were interested in urban housing problems and worked with the Architects' Small House Service Bureau of Massachusetts and the Boston Housing Association throughout the 1920s and 1930s. They submitted small house designs to the Department of the Interior for the Subsistence Homestead Communities, remodeled apartments for the Lynn Slum Clearance Project, and developed housing in Mariemont, Ohio. Materials of the firm include correspondence, financial data, reports, specifications, photographs, blueprints, drawings, and research materials that document the firm's projects and commissions. The collection also includes personal papers of the three architects including illustrated travel diaries, watercolors, sketchbooks, and architecural scrapbooks. Records from Eleanor Manning O'Connor's private architectural work after 1937 and material from the Seventeen Associated Architects are included. There are a number of documents about the Howe family in the personal papers of Lois Lilley Howe.

Series I-III: the bulk of the collection consists of 282 glass photographic negatives taken, with only few exceptions by Lois Lilley Howe (1892-1912), either 4"x5" (159) or 5"x7" (110), with a few large format 8"x10" plates (12). About 135 of the negatives have associated prints (apparently made when the collection was first processed by the Cambridge Historical Society). Subjects of the negatives include several studies of a laurel-wreathed young man, Lydiard Horton, several young women, and a child; studies of various flowers, taken indoors and out; fire and fireplaces; clients and friends of Howe such as members of the Alfred C. Potter family; staged portraits; scenes of holidays (ca. 1895-1906) spent in Tamworth, N.H., near Mount Chocorua; members of the Twitchell family; Dr. Samuel McChord Crothers, minister in Cambridge; landscapes along the Charles River; and various historical houses in Cambridge. Series IV-V: Includes ca. 100 photographs either created or collected by Howe, and some taken in collaboration with James A. Wells, in a wide variety of sizes and print types, of houses, interiors, landscapes, and people, landscapes again depicting Charles River views; members of the Cambridge Photographic Club ; and members of the Vaughan and Abbot families in theatrical costume. Series V consists of drawings and plans, published and unpublished, including ms. drawings of the Hastings-Holmes house, birthplace of Oliver Wendell Holmes, and of an old house which stood on a site at Harvard Law School. Also in this series is a signed copy of Details from Old New England Houses, measured and drawn by Lois L. Howe and Constance Fuller (1913). Series VI consists of a folder of genealogical materials, including a partially completed pedigree chart; assorted genealogical notes on the Pomeroy and Spelman families; and two copies of a biographical sketch of Lois Lilley Howe.
