Title:
Letters of the Underwood family, 1813, 1861, and 1913.
In a letter, 1813 May 8, Joseph Rogers Underwood writes to his uncle, Edmund Rogers, that he has been taken prisoner of war by the British and is being humanely treated on the schooner "Mary" near Fort Meigs on the Miami River. In a letter, 1913 May 8, Edmund Rogers' descendant, Edmund P. Rogers, gives the 1813 letter to Joseph Rogers Underwood's descendant, Oscar Wilder Underwood. In a letter, 1861 April 2, Joseph Rogers Underwood writes to the Honorable W. Thomas about a pamphlet by John Cabell Breckinridge and the latter's speech before the Kentucky legislature in support of preserving the Union by a Constitutional amendment guaranteeing slavery in the territories. He mentions his own efforts to preserve the Union and his fears of Civil War.

Thomas, William H. William Thomas papers, 1860-1915.
Title:
William Thomas papers, 1860-1915.
This collection reflects William Thomas' activities in Massachusetts before 1904, and in Connecticut from 1904-1915. Includes letters from Mabel, an independent single woman living and working near Boston. The diaries cover the years 1860-1906, with gaps, particularly between 1861-1866. The entries are rather sparse and provide little insight into his daily activities, although some of them are reflective of the moral and religious conflicts in his mind. Thomas' children wrote to him in 1909 and 1915, but there is very little material from the intervening years. Mabel was the most prolific writer as she described her daily activities and the progress of granddaughter Felicia Doughty, 1902-1915. William Jr. wrote detailed letters about setting up a mill in Quebec, Canada, and about his work in Rhode Island, 1908-1915. Only a few letters exist that were written by daughter Eleanor or granddaughter Felicia Doughty, 1902-1915. The bulk of the collection consists of incoming letters and circulars to William Thomas. Among Thomas' church-related papers are a volume with the names of church members and a list of those who needed pastoral visits. Notes of possible sermon themes have been gathered into one folder and are accompanied by a combination note- and scrapbook also used for citing religious themes. The only remnants of Thomas' military service are a few circulars about the formation of a military chaplain's association and letters from lawyers in Washington, DC, offering to help him recover lost wages from the war. Financial records consist of one volume recording his stocks, 1873, and receipts from 1909 only, divided into those for milk and those for other household goods. Also among the receipts are two dog licenses. There are two letters and one formula for a prescription in the folder of non-family materials.

Alabama. Governor. Legal case files of Knight vs. James, 1975-1988.
Title:
Legal case files of Knight vs. James, 1975-1988.
On 1981 Jan. 15, John F. Knight, Catherine Coleman, Charles R. Anderson, Alma S. Freeman, et. al., filed a suit in the United State District Court in Montgomery against the Governor of the state of Alabama, the trustees of Auburn University and Troy State University, the members of the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE), the State Superintendent of Education (Wayne Teague), and various members of the Alabama Public School and College Authority (APSCA). The suit called for a merger of Auburn University at Montgomery and Troy State in Montgomery into Alabama State University. The plaintiffs claimed that AUM and Troy were predominantly white institutions, and that many of the courses and programs offered at the two schools duplicated or conflicted with the programs at Alabama State University (a predominantly black institution). As a result, a segregated higher education system existed in the Montgomery metropolitan area. Because Alabama State was established first, the plaintiffs argued that the black university should absorb the programs of the other two schools and retain its black identity. Knight vs James parallels another important case that occurred almost simultaneously, the United States vs Alabama. In this case the Justice Department charged that the predominantly white University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) and predominantly black Alabama A & M University violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title VI forbids the use of federal funds in institutions and programs that discriminate on the basis on race. The case called for the implementation of a plan to correct the duplication of courses and programs, unequal funding, and other areas of concern regarding racial discrimination. This series contains records that relate to Knight vs James as well as materials used in investigations of the Alabama Commission on Higher Education and the state's public postsecondary schools. Types of material include briefs, case exhibits, correspondence, affidavits, newspaper clippings, reports, university catalogs, memoranda, minutes, resolutions, handbooks, pretrial orders, and journal articles.
