The collection includes letters to Edwin De Leon, American diplomat, concerning sectionalism in the United States; to Fanny Kingsley, widow of British author Charles Kingsley; to Lady Augusta Stanley, wife of Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, Dean of Westminster, discussing Froude's writings; to General John Jarvis Bisset on the government of South Africa, 1877; a statement against having literary authority in England comparable to the French Academy; and letters discussing Froude's discovery of William Thomas' sixteenth century work, "The Pilgrim," and plans for its publication; to Robert Spence Watson about a lecture appointment at Newcastle, 1866; to poet John Westland Marston, 1877; and to American publisher Charles Scribner concerning international copyright, 1879.

Distinguished historian James Anthony Froude was born at Dartington rectory, Devon, in 1818. He was the brother of William Froude (1810-1879), engineer and naval architect, and of Richard Hurrell Froude (1803-1836), divine. The younger Froude was educated at Westminster School from 1830, and then privately in the village of Merton.
