Papers, 1728-1893 (bulk ca. 1784 - ca. 1826). They include correspondence, bonds, indentures, bills of sale (including some for ships), vouchers, receipts, powers of attorney, other legal and financial papers, and a few miscellaneous pieces of printed ephemera, such as prices current at Livorno and New Orleans, and a blank form for a bill of exchange. Most of the material consists of letters from merchants and business associates in New York City, Philadelphia, and elsewhere, about the settlement of accounts, trade, land speculation, introductions, and personal matters. Individual correspondents include Samuel Ogden and other members of the Ogden family; Peter Collins; Nicholas and Henry Cruger; Josiah Hardy and James Rivington, Jr.; John Wilcocks; and Thomas Lawrence and Jacob Morris. Subjects include Low's mercantile activities, especially the import of Madeira wine; his purchases of land in upstate New York and Canada, some in partnership with Samuel Ogden; the closing of the firm of Lawrence & Morris; and occasional references to politics and personal affairs. A 1788 letter from Peter Collins alludes to Low's work as a member of the state constitutional convention. A letter from Samuel Ogden discusses financial issues arising from his use of the labor of slaves belonging to Low's brother Isaac. A letter from John Smithson to a correspondent named Irwin, written in 1807, includes a detailed discussion of how to deal with having had a vessel seized, apparently passing on advice from Low's business partner Wallace. Personal material includes a letter from his daughter, Henrietta Low, and some invoices for her schooling and other expenses. Later material includes letters, telegrams, and miscellaneous papers, some pertaining to Augustus Fleming, others members of the Beekman family.

The letters written to Low are concentrated from 1792 to 1828, while Fleming's correspondence dates 1806 to 1858. The collection dates from 1792 to 1858.

Papers of William J. Spence and his wife Hannah, of Brooklyn and Edenvale, Long Island, a development near Bohemia in the town of Islip. Bulk of the papers are deeds, mortgages or bonds for properties in Brooklyn or in Edenvale involving William and Hannah Spence and Thomas J. Leslie, Augustus Fleming, william Molineux, Mott Bedell, Thomas D. Carman and others. There are also papers about the Edenvale Association; a description of a "Parallet Paddle Wheel for Propelling Vessels" invented by Spence; specifications for a house to be built in Edenvale; and a power of attorney for a case involving Spence in London, England, 1851.

Correspondence includes letters from Augustus Fleming and copies of Stevens' replies concerning land transactions for Cornelius and Nicholas Low, other business matters, and an accusation that Stevens was influencing settlers to vote "loco foco," 1830's-1840's; and other letters concerning legal and financial matters, news of family and friends, sale of butter, and other business affairs, many from the Martin Smith family. Legal papers include land contracts, deeds, bonds, affadivits, mortgages, and estate papers. Financial records include account books from his legal work on behalf of others, 1853-1882, including his guardianship of the Hogan children, 1867-1876; daybook from his accounts with Cornelius and Nicholas Low, 1833-1869; and account book concerning property and merchandise sold, 1861-1881. Records from his public office holding include pay records for teachers, 1865, document concerning the appraisal of land owned by St. Regis Indians, 1828, justice of the peace docket book, 1825-1852, and poor records such as authorizations for aid, case statements, lists, and correspondence, 1877. Other items include survey book, 1878; maps; school compositions and verses by Stevens, 1821-1830; Civil War letters of his son Jehial Stevens, Jr., 1862-1865, two business letters to his son Walter, 1892; and school records of his grandson Robert Stevens, 1888.

Collection consists of correspondence, orders, appointments, rosters, accounts, and other papers of Fleming when he was colonel of the 106th Regiment, brigadier general commanding the 10th Brigade, and major general commanding the 3rd Division, Infantry.
