Business and personal correspondence, legal papers, justice of the peace and town records, account books, and miscellaneous family papers. Correspondence includes letters from Augustus Fleming and copies of Stevens' replies concerning land transactions for Cornelius and Nicholas Low, other business matters, and an accusation that Stevens was influencing settlers to vote "loco foco," 1830's-1840's; and other letters concerning legal and financial matters, news of family and friends, sale of butter, and other business affairs, many from the Martin Smith family. Legal papers include land contracts, deeds, bonds, affadivits, mortgages, and estate papers. Financial records include account books from his legal work on behalf of others, 1853-1882, including his guardianship of the Hogan children, 1867-1876; daybook from his accounts with Cornelius and Nicholas Low, 1833-1869; and account book concerning property and merchandise sold, 1861-1881. Records from his public office holding include pay records for teachers, 1865, document concerning the appraisal of land owned by St. Regis Indians, 1828, justice of the peace docket book, 1825-1852, and poor records such as authorizations for aid, case statements, lists, and correspondence, 1877. Other items include survey book, 1878; maps; school compositions and verses by Stevens, 1821-1830; Civil War letters of his son Jehial Stevens, Jr., 1862-1865, two business letters to his son Walter, 1892; and school records of his grandson Robert Stevens, 1888.
