Tax assessment letters for 1776 and 1777 sent to Henry Gardner, treasurer and receiver general of Massachusetts, from the towns of Arundel, Berwick, Bristol, Booth Bay, Buxton, Edgecomb, Georgetown, Gorham, Harpswell, Murrayfield, Pownalborough, and Woolwich in the district of Maine. Also includes tax assessment for Stoughtonham and Tyringham in Mass. A few of these letters mention the poor state of the town and the difficulty in paying the taxes assessed.

Correspondence, bills and receipts, memoranda, deeds, plats, legal papers, abstracts, and extracts from birth and baptism registers with affidavits, all concerning the changing ownership of the farm lands of John Jekyll located in Stow and Boxborough, Mass. Includes 2 small vols. of agency accounts (1779-88) kept by the agents who managed the property for Jekyll's heirs, scattered during the Revolution because of their Loyalist leanings, many returning to England. The bulk of the collection concerns the search for and verification of the heirs, along with the maintenance of the property. The principal agents were Henry Gardner, Joseph Gardner, Herman Brimmer, and Martin Brimmer. There are also notes and memoranda kept by James Sullivan, who was involved in the legal aspects of ownership of the property.

Notices (or warrants) date from 1759 (Rehoboth), 1775 (Dartmouth), and 1805 (Hadley and Yarmouth). Warrants are issues and signed by Harrison Gray (1759), Henry Gardner (1775), and Jonathan Jackson (1805, Hadley). The Yarmouth notice is signed by David Scudder, clerk of the Barnstable County Court.

Series records Militia Act assessments made on various towns with populations of Quakers. In ledger format, each page lists amount assessed to collectors in a particular town, along with amounts paid. Some indicate that the tax was abated by the General Court, or transferred to the town's overall Class Tax bill for deficient classes. End of volume also contains records relating to 1781 payments of 1770-1773 taxes owed by the town of Conway, then part of Hampshire County in Massachusetts. Also included is a small assortment of actual assessors' returns from 1781 relating to the Quaker Tax, sent to Treasurer Gardner (1774-1782).

After the Revolutionary War's end in 1783, Massachusetts struggled to collect outstanding taxes to pay off accumulated debt. In an attempt to reconcile Treasury books and begin bringing in arrears, in 1782 the office of Treasurer Thomas Ivers (1782-1787) formed a Committee for Auditing of the Late Treasurer Gardner's Accounts, i.e., including taxes not yet collected under Henry Gardner (1774-1782). Resolves 1783, Jan 1784 Sess, c 65 (Feb. 18, 1784) additionally authorized collection of taxes levied prior to 1775 by the office of Treasurer Harrison Gray (1753-1774), and remaining uncollected under Gardner. A small collection of papers of Henry Gardner of Stow, Mass., first treasurer and receiver general of Massachusetts, including receipts regarding the printing of Colony currency and support for the poor of Boston. Also, papers of physician Joseph Gardner, including some correspondence and papers regarding his estate, with a complete inventory of real and personal property. Also, some papers for Henry, Clarissa (Holbrook), Henry J., and Herbert Gardner, among other family members. Henry J. Gardner's papers mostly relate to his business interests as Henry J. Gardner and Company, but include correspondence (1885) regarding a French spoliation claim.

Title: Warrants for depreciation notes for service in the Continental Army, 1780-1783.

Series consists of bundles of warrants, signed and approved by the Governor or Council, authorizing the state treasurer to pay Massachusetts soldiers the sum owed for depreciation of wages. Subseries 1: Warrants issued to Treasurer Henry Gardner from Feb. 1780 to Sept. 1782 are arranged by regiment and include accompanying signed orders from soldiers requesting depreciation pay, and certificates issued by the Committee to Settle with the Army establishing amount of payment. Orders were submitted by individual soldiers (or their surviving relatives), or by groups. If submitted in groups, certificates and warrants reflect the total combined payment. Occasionally, submissions include documents signed by the selectmen of a town confirming that the person requesting payment was the deceased soldier's heir, or, as spouse or slave owner, one entitled to the soldier's wages. Subseries 2: Warrants issued to Treasurer Thomas Ivers from Oct. 1782 to Mar.1783 are arranged numerically. Only certificates are attached to warrants in this group, with orders filed separately in: Massachusetts. Treasury Office. Orders from Massachusetts regiments, 1780-1782 ((M-Ar)985X), which is arranged by regiment, then grouped alphabetically by name, with corresponding warrant no. indicated. Series includes orders for the following regiments: Col. Greaton's 3rd Regiment, Col. Sheppard's 4th Regiment, Col. Putnam's 5th Regiment, Col. Michael Jackson's 8th Regiment, Col. Wesson's 9th Regiment, and Col. Crane's 3rd Artillery Regiment.
