For those whose lives pre-date the era of photography, the contents of the folders are often photographic reproductions of other image types, such as etchings, paintings, or drawings. In a few cases, the images themselves may be original etchings or sketches.

Correspondence (chiefly letters received), articles, poems, speeches, book reviews, diaries and journals, miscellaneous notebooks, scrapbooks, clippings, and other printed material. Correspondence concerns Thayer's writings, particularly in the area of Italian history, and his connections with Harvard as editor of the Harvard Graduates' Magazine and later as an overseer. Also included are some miscellaneous papers of William Warland Clapp, a Boston journalist; and some papers of Thomas Wentworth Higginson, chiefly from a European trip made by Higginson in 1872.

Title: Travels of the tribe of Manhattan, or, A trip of the independent order of nitre hunters into the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and across the flat tops with incidental experiences on the way, 1920 Sep.

Bound typescript describing the travel to northern Colorado by Isabel Anderson, American diplomat Larz Anderson, Sam Culbertson, Jack Story, Jane Story, and a Captain Stewart, of Boston, Massachusetts, in September 1920. The typescript was written by an unidentified member of the group. The party travelled in a private railroad car, the "Manhattan," to Colorado, and toured Denver, Glenwood Springs, Rifle, Meeker, and other locations by automobile. From Elk's Lodge in the White River Valley, the group took overnight camping trips on horseback, accompanied by guides, and rode from the lodge across the Flat Tops to Glenwood Springs, where they met the "Manhattan" for their return to Boston. The volume contains 42 leaves of photographs, the majority of which were taken during the camping trips.

Platt, Charles A. (Charles Adams), 1861-1933. Charles A. Platt architectural records and papers, 1879-1981 (bulk 1882-1933).

Title: Charles A. Platt architectural records and papers, 1879-1981 (bulk 1882-1933).

This collection contains materials related to Platt's personal and professional lives, the bulk originating from Platt's office in the form of project drawings, photographs, and records documenting architectural projects from 1901-1933. Several earlier projects and projects completed by Platt's office after his death are also documented. A small group of drawings was created for publication only, and some drawings may have served as both project records and presentation drawings. The archive also contains typescript transcriptions of correspondence from Platt's travels to Europe in 1879 and from 1882-1886, as well as transcribed letters to his wife, Eleanor Hardy Bunker Platt, and a diary kept during his brief engagement as a member of the Food Administration in Italy after World War I. Additional papers include limited personal and professional correspondence. Lastly, the collection contains original glass plate negatives of photographs of Italian Renaissance gardens taken by Platt and/or his brother William Platt in the spring of 1892. Platt incorporated some of these images in ITALIAN GARDENS, published by Harper in 1894.

Consisting primarily of correspondence and memoranda, the letters document sponsorship of local botanists and plant collecting expeditions in China, India, Java, the Philippines, Japan, etc.; plant and journal exchanges with botanical institutions; taxonomic discussions; and Arboretum finances and budgets. Correspondents include members of the scientific community such as directors of scientific academies, taxonomists, botanists, horticulturists, etc. Numerous letters to Harvard administraators include financial statements and discussions of the Case Estates, Atkins Institute, Bussey Institution, Gray Herbarium, Harvard Forest, etc.

While the majority of the holding is photographs that document the history of individual plants and the collection, the Records of the Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection also includes publications by Larz and Isabel Anderson, articles and photographs of Weld and the Bonsai Collection before it came to the Arnold Arboretum, and correspondence between Isabel Anderson and E.D. Merrill about the donation of the Bonsai Collection to the Arnold Arboretum. Also included are articles about the Bonsai Collection at the Arnold Arboretum and its curators. Photographs include prints of the Bonsai houses, exhibits, maintenance, and other general subjects. Individual portraits of the plants over the years 1969-1989 are also included, along with some oversized prints.
