Papers of Elmer Drew Merrill, 1935-1946 (inclusive).

The Elmer Drew Merrill papers reflect the academic and administrative activities of the Arboretum from 1935-1946. Consisting primarily of correspondence and memoranda, the letters document sponsorship of local botanists and plant collecting expeditions in China, India, Java, the Philippines, Japan, etc.; plant and journal exchanges with botanical institutions; taxonomic discussions; and Arboretum finances and budgets. Correspondents include members of the scientific community such as directors of scientific academies, taxonomists, botanists, horticulturists, etc. Numerous letters to Harvard administraators include financial statements and discussions of the Case Estates, Atkins Institute, Bussey Institution, Gray Herbarium, Harvard Forest, etc.
