William Wallace Tooker once was widely recognized as one of his era's leading specialists in Coastal Algonquian culture, history and place names. A productive and prolific writer, he published 12 books, some 50 pamphlets and over 100 articles between 1888 and 1911. During his life and for many years thereafter, nearly every scholar interested in one aspect or another of Coastal Algonquian life routinely consulted his work.
Anthropologist and author of several works on Long Island Indian place names.

Collection of Tooker's manuscripts and texts of his speeches, many concerning Indian place names in New York City, Long Island, Virginia, and other areas. Other manuscripts include history of Indians on Long Island, and their land claims, 1883-1902. Museum of the American Indian Library houses publications of some of Tooker's papers. Tooker and O.B. Ackerly handcopied some Long Island Indian deeds. Tooker also copied parts of William Struchey's A DICTIONARY OF THE POWHATAN LANGUAGE; a translation of the Bible into the Natick language native to Massachusetts, arranged alphabetically by Tooker in 1904; and a dictionary of the Natick language. Collection also includes some manuscripts of other researchers such as Orville B. Ackerly about related subjects, some correspondence, and a map.

Pages 254-256 lists sources. With a letter from Wallace Tooker to Gatschet loosely inserted, dated October 16, 1895, discussing Algonquin terms for "rainbow."
