An award certificate issued by the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture and presented to Mrs. John Hunter in October of 1825 for a second premium for blankets exhibited at the Brighton Show. An engraving, with the words "Commonwealth of Massachusetts" and a picture of the Massachusetts state seal, a cornucopia, a plow, and other agriculture implements, is printed at the top of the certificate.

Papers of Richard Cranch, watchmaker, legislator and jurist of Braintree, Mass., 1767-1844 include an early letter from Nathaniel Ward referring to Cranch's inventions for clock pendulums and thermometers, 31 March 1767; papers relating to his duties in the Mass. General Court, 1782-87; certificates of membership and notices for various societies, 1787-94 including a letter from Jeremy Belknap, 28 December 1791 announcing his election to the Massachusetts Historical Society (which he declined); and a draft of a letter by Cranch to John Adams, 1790 about Nathan Reed's abilities as an inventor. The collection also documents Richard Cranch's interest and membership in the Humane Society, the Derby School, Hingham, Mass., Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture, and the Society for Propagating the Gospel among the Indians in North America. Collection also includes papers of Richard's son, William Cranch such as briefs on legal cases, 1802-40 including a Supreme Court opinion by Bushrod Washington on the case of Grotius (DeWitt Clinton) 1815; letters to William Cranch mainly on legal subjects from Clement Cox, and Henry W. Davis, 1832-44; and a letter from his son-in-law Erastus Brooks describing his trip to New England and writing for the New York Express.

This small collection of manuscript material contains correspondence to Hull for the Revolutionary period while he was commander at West Point, material on personal, political, legal and financial affairs in the period 1784 to 1794, and personal items from the period 1806 to 1822. Also included are twelve items dealing with Hull's experiments at new farming techniques. Many are addressed to the Massachusetts Agricultural Society and make references to a premium being offered for the largest crop raised on one acre of land.

The MSPA, incorporated 1792, introduced new breeds of stock, sponsored research in animal diseases and pest eradication; supported 4-H Club activities, Arnold Arboretum and Harvard University, the Botanic Garden (Cambridge, Mass.), and other horticultural stations; worked with other Mass. agricultural societies; ran the Brighton Cattle Show (1816-35) and participated in many other exhibitions and fairs. (cont) They offered prizes to farmers for farms, machinery, products, animals, inventions, experiments, domestic manufactures, orchards, salt-marsh reclamation, and horticultural produce. Among the many correspondents are Francis H. Appleton, Peter C. Brooks, Edward Everett, Benjamin Guild, Levi Lincoln, Thomas Motley Jr., Elias Phinney, William Prescott, James R. Reynolds, and George S. West.
