Title: Philip Tabb horse book and James Maury Fontaine account book, 1772-1857.

The first part of the manuscript contains records concerning the breeding and sale of Philip Tabb's horses. The entries give the names of the horses with their sires, dams, years of birth and sales price. The first three pages cover the dates 1774-1813. A fourth page of entries is in a different hand with dates from 1847-1857. The fifth page with manuscript entries bears the inscription "James Fontaine his book." Fountaine's book shows accounts (1775-1783) with Williamsburg residents including the merchant William Holt, the apothecaries Pasteur and Galt, the printer Alexander Purdie, and Colonel William Aylett who operated the Public Store. Also mentioned are Edward Layton, William Dickerson, the firm of Messrs. Bracken and Lilly, Ben Creadle and the estate of Fountaine's father-in-law, Carter Burwell. The entry for Ben Creadle (p. 6) notes that it is an old entry carried forward from the almanac for 1771.

The property is currently known as the William Finnie property, 506 E. Francis St. Mentions Mr. Bassett's land.

Account books kept by Carter Burwell (1716-1756) and his son, Nathaniel Burwell (1750-1814), for their plantation, Carter's Grove, James City County, Virginia. One account book contains accounts of their neighbor, James Bray (d. 1744), who ran a tannery and shoemaking shop at his plantation; others contain accounts for the building of Carter's Grove. Also, a Book of Common Prayer and a Bible owned by Carter Burwell; four stud horse advertisements and a poster on pedigree and performance of the "late Eclipse." The accounts include names of James Anderson, Governor Norborne Berkeley, Baron de Botetourt, the Rev. John Bracken, Ann Burwell, Armistead Burwell, John Carter, George Charleton, Josiah Chowning, Mrs. Davenport, Dr. John Minson Galt, Governor William Gooch, Philip Grymes, Matthew Hubbard, William Moody, Hugh Nelson, John Norton, Dr. William Pasteur, Dr. John de Sequeyra, Richard Taliaferro, William Trebell, Robert Waller, Henry Wetherburn, Thomas Wharton, Ralph Wormeley, and many others.

Correspondence, legal and financial papers, survey maps and reports. The collection consists chiefly of the business and legal papers of Nathaniel Burwell of "Carter's Grove," and "Carter's Hall." Many of these concern the estates of William Pasteur and John Paradise . They include a power of attorney, 1788 Aug. 8, from Paradise to Burwell in the hand of Thomas Jefferson, and witnessed by Jefferson, William Short and Philip Mazzei, and a letter, 1792 June 15 from Jefferson to Burwell re Paradise's debts. There are also estate appraisals for livestock, slaves, and household and farming implements of Pasteur; Burwell's claims against the estate of Thomas Nelson; accounts, 1814-1828, of Burwell's estate, documents from several suits against it, and an account of the sale of household goods and library. Correspondents include Robert Anderson, Lewis Burwell, Dabney Carr, Francis Corbin, Richard Corbin, Charles Copeland, James Maury Fontaine, David Jameson, Hugh Nelson, Judith Nelson, William Nelson, Robert Carter Nicholas and Robert Page.
