The first and largest parts of both these volumes (Nos. 175 and 176) relate to Virginia officers and men who received certificates for advanced pay, officers and men who received certificates for the balance of their full pay, and officers and men who received half pay. The lists are arranged alphabetically by initial letter of surname and show by whom the pay was received and the date and amount of payment. The lists in the two volumes are not duplicates. Volume 175 also has alphabetical lists of New York officers and men of different regiments. The last part of volume 176 contains an alphabetical list of offiecers and soldiers of the "Georgia Continental establishment" who applied for certificates for bounty land; a return of officers of the Georgia Line; a list of the offiecers of the 1st-4th New York Regiments, Continental Service; a muster roll of Capt. Samuel Logan's Company, 5th New York Battalion, for March and April 1780; and an alphabetical list of the soldiers in the New York Line who received bounty land in Cayuga County, N.Y. Most of the lists contains entries dated no later than 1787; a few contain entries dated as late as 1808; amd some are undated. The date of these copies is not given, but some are copies of certified copies made in 1818 and 1856.

Quarterly statements of articles received, issued, and delivered; forage issued; payrolls; contingent expenses; and summary statements consolidating the information in the individual reports. The statements give such information as the dates of receipt and issue, voucher numbers, the persons to whom issued or delivered, and the kinds and amounts of the articles. The first quarterly statements cover only the last month of the quarter (Feb. 1781) and are in volume 108. Those for the quarter covering March-May 1781 and March-May 1782 are in volume 107. The rest of the statements are in volume 102, but there are very few for the quarter September-November 1781.

They relate to such matters s the preparation and distribution of his "Regulations," reactions and questions about this work, appointments of inspectors, supply needs and problems, organization and administration of army and militia units, enemy movements and strength, condition of state militia and other army units, British invasion of Virginia, problems with the Virginia militia, his lands in Virginia, founding of the Society of the Cincinnati, etc. Some of his more frequent correspondents were: Col. Jean Baptiste Ternant, Col. William Davies, the Board of War, M. de Franey, Chevalier de la Luzerne, Gen. Nathanael Greene, Gov. Thomas Jefferson, Col. Edward Carrington, Col. George Gibson, Gen. Thomas Nelson, Gen. George Weedon, Gen. Peter Muhlenberg, Louis de Pontiere, Gen. Robert Lawson, Gen. Isaac Gregory, Col. J. Junis, Gen. Mordecai Gist, Maj. Buller Claiborne, Capt. John Pryor, Capt. They consist of six bound volumes: a manuscript in several different hands, in French, of his Regulations for the order and discipline of the troops of the United States, undated, but bound in a 1778 newspaper; a manuscript entitled Regulations pour la cavalerie ou corps legionaire [sic], partly in English, discussing the reorganization of the Continental Army's cavalry units in 1780-1781; a letter book, January 1780 to January 1781, dealing with official military matters and containing letters written to the War Board, George Washington, and other officers; Thoughts on a national militia, ca. 1784, a volume containing several miscellaneous documents in French and English discussing the establishment of a peacetime army; Thoughts on the growth of the western territory, ca. 1788, discussing political relations with Spain and Britain, and proposing settlements in Spanish Louisiana; and a Journal, in French, 1790-1792, describing work, relations with tenants, and projected improvements on his farm in Oneida County (N.Y.).

Gates writes to the Commissary General of Prisoners expressing concern over the number of prisoners escaping. He also complains that the Board, which is responsible for the care of prisoners, is not receiving enough information from Boudinot to do its job properly. He recommends that Boudinot establish better communication with his subordinates and asks him to confer with George Washington on several questions.
