Adoption of the dollar as the U. S. monetary unit. Importance of a favorable reception for Benjamin Franklin in the U. S. Reference to John Adams and Colonel Humphreys. 1790 July 9: Jefferson sends George Clinton copies of two acts regarding the 1790 census and land sales. 1790 October 1: Jefferson writes to Henry Remsen regarding the recognition of McDonogh's mission from England and the leasing of his house and. 1798 February 21: Jefferson to Horatio Gates. Letter delivered to General Kościuszko. Possible war with France, whose attitude, like England's, threatens U. S. commerce. Kościuszko disappointed at France's peace with Austria; had hoped his country would rise again. 1808 September 6: Jefferson, Monticello, to John Page, Richmond. Offers to transfer Page's office of Commissioner of Loans for Virginia to his son, Francis, because of Page's ill health. Page's endorsement: "Most generous & consolatory to me! !" 1819 April 4: Jefferson, Monticello, to Robert S. Garrett. Thanks for recommendations of Don Marcus Escopinachi, Dr. Speed, and of Mr. Bonfils. Except for Dr. Cooper, the University will hire no professors until construction is complete. 1821 December 9: Jefferson, Monticello, to James Breckenridge. Copy of Greenlee's plat will make his patent good against a junior claim. Meeting of Board of Visitors, with John Hartwell Cocke, Chapman Johnson, and James Madison attending. State of the University published in papers. Decision on commencing the library deferred. 1822 October 11: Jefferson, Monticello, to Arthur Spicer Brockenbrough, University of Virginia. Sends copy of resolution of Board of Visitors, authorizing building of the library, and of an advertisement for the Richmond Enquirer and Charlottesville Central Gazette regarding collection of University subscriptions in arrears.

Title: Pattern book [of textiles], 1767.

Swatch book inscribed inside front cover: Henry Remsen Junr. & Company, their pattern book, received from Messrs. Benjamin & John Bower, merchts. in Manchester, New York, October 20th, 1767. The book contains 41 pages of fabric swatches, containing from one to twenty examples of textile fabrics per page. Some additional pages of swatches have been torn out. Each swatch has an order or sample number. The first examples are of fustian (cotton and linen blend), mostly checks, simple plaids, stripes, and one basket-weave sample. Some of the striped fabrics may contain silk or woolen threads. As well, the book contains examples of moleskin, cotton velvets (called Manchester velvets), cotton corduroys, and dimities woven in various patterns. A few of the fabrics are labeled barragon, rib, or dyed jeans. There are no prices. Henry Rutgers Remsen wrote his name on one page. An inscription appears on the inside back cover: from Mary L. Ogden to Cornelia(?) [illegible].

He discusess the criminality of a paper money system, the consequences of putting funds in speculative enterprises that may fail and leave the investors with worthless script as in the South Sea Bubble, and mentions reports that the militia had to be called to disperse a mob threatening William Duer.

Title: William Edgar papers 1750-1870

William Edgar (1736-1820) was an Irish-born merchant of Detroit, Michigan, where he was a financial agent for the British Army post. He moved to New York City in 1780 or 1781 and engaged in trade with China and East India. Collection consists of negative copies of correspondence, accounts and other papers relating to Edgar's trading post at Detroit; and correspondence concerning family and personal matters. Papers until the end of the American Revolution are dated at New York, Albany, Montreal, Michilimackinac, Philadelphia, Trenton, and elsewhere. Later papers relate to trade with London, Calcutta, Canton, China, and locations within the U.S. Correspondents include Gerard Beekman, Aaron Burr, DeWitt Clinton, Horatio Gates, Alexander Hamilton, Brockholst Livingston, Philip Livingston, Alexander Macomb, Gurdon S. Title: DeWitt Clinton papers

United States senator, 1802-1803; Mayor of New York City, 1803-1815 (except for 1807-1808 and 1810-1811); Governor of New York State, 1817-1821 and 1825-1828. Papers consist chiefly of letters, 1790-1835, but also include military commissions signed by Clinton as Governor of New York and other official and legal documents; autographs; portraits; clippings; and printed material. Clinton's letters contain discussions of senatorial, gubernatorial, and mayoral matters; politics; real estate in New York City and State; legislation concerning the Manhattan Company of New York City and its Utica and Poughkeepsie branches; proposed banks; canal construction; New York City historical and medical societies; and family and personal matters. The two major recipients of letters are John Pintard (1759-1844), merchant, philanthropist, and New York City official, and Henry Remsen (1736-1792).
