The papers of art historian and museum director Wilhelm Reinhold Valentiner measure 6.9 linear feet and date from 1853 to 1977. The papers, 1878-1964 (20.5 linear feet) of museum curator, director, and art scholar William Mills Ivins (1881-1961) consist of personal and professional correspondence, writings, notes, photographs, and Ivins family papers. Ivins was Curator of Prints, 1916-1946, Assistant Director, 1933-1938, and Acting Director, 1938-1940 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The collection contains professional and personal correspondence with art historians, art dealers, museum curators, print and book collectors, and artists concerning the history of print making, book design and illustration, print collectors and collecting, exhibitions, and museum administration. Correspondence files appear to be complete, and correspondence is of substantive content. Also found are Ivins' published and unpublished writings and lectures, and notes. Of particular interest are the letters from Bernard Berenson, Paul J. Sachs, and Theodore Sizer, each of whom corresponded with Ivins freqently over extended periods about both personal and professional and matters.Ivins' family papers include family correspondence, genealogies, and photographs. The papers of Ivin's wife, illustrator Florence Wyman Ivins (1881-1948), and the correspondence of several other relatives, can be found here augmented by family photographs.

The letters provide a description of the economic crisis in these countries and the effect on the academic community. Comments on politics discuss the end of the Weimar Republic, the rise of Hitler and the dangers of communism and nationalism. Among those writing are Ernst Mayer, Friedrich von der Leyen, Max Friedländer and Hanns Oertel. A large part of the papers document Gruener's career as professor of German and ultimately chairman of the department of Germanic languages at Yale University. Among his Yale correspondents are Arthur T. Hadley, Anson P. Stokes, Wilbur L. Cross, William Walker, Russell Chittenden, Henry S. Graves, James R. Angell and Charles Seymour. Included also are manuscripts and notes by Gruener in the field of German literature.

The Emergency Committee in Aid of Displaced Foreign Scholars was formed in New York City in 1933 by American academicians for the purpose of employing refugee German scholars in American institutions. Many of these refugee scholars were Jews displaced by the National Socialist government. The collection consists chiefly of grant files on refugee scholars who applied for aid from the Committee. The records also include correspondence with other refugee and philanthropic organizations and with the educational institutions which accepted refugee scholars.

The largest portion of the papers consists of originals and copies of almost all of Fickénscher's music. The remaining portion contains correspondence and professional and personal papers. Fickénscher's compositions include manuscripts, master sheets and prints of musical scores for orchestral works; orchestra with voice and chorus, particularly "Aucassin and Nicolete," "The chamber blue," and "The land east of the sun"; chamber music, particularly "Quintet," and "Willowwood"; choral works; organ works; sacred music including selections from the Episcopal Order of Communion, 1945; settings for University of Virginia college songs; and concert songs for voice and piano including "Acht Deutche Volkslieder Aum Konzertvortrag." Professional and personal papers include a catalog of his work by William W. Jones and a biographical article by Gordon Rumson; memorabilia from concert performances of Fickénscher and his wife, Edith; business records of McIntire concerts at the University of Virginia, 1919-1939 which include copies of contracts with Pablo Casals, Amelita Galli-Curci, Jascha Heifetz, Fritz Kreisler, Yehudi Menuhin, and Rosa Ponselle; family memorabilia including photographs; reviews; clippings; and a variety of material concerning his invention of the Polytone. There is also an autographed copy of Peter Van de Kamp's "Lullaby," and a 33 1/3 recording of Fickénscher's setting of Rossetti's "Willowwood." Correspondents include Howald T. Bailey, Alfred V. Frankenstein, Arditha F. Fickénscher, Edith C. Fickénscher, Max Friedländer, Percy Grainger, Edwin Hughes, Walter E. Koons, Quinto Maganini, Robert S. Pace, and Karl Wecker.
