Title:
Universal Newsreel Volume 36, Release 31
The original release sheet reads: SUB DISASTER: NATION MOURNS 129 LOST IN TEST "I conclude with great regret and sadness that the submarine Thresher is lost". With those words Admiral George Anderson, chief of naval operations mounted an epitaph for 129 men aboard the nuclear craft. After an overhaul the Thresher, fastest and deepest diving of all submarines, was on a test dive in 8,400 feet of water, 200 miles east of Boston, accompanied by the tender Skylark. Presumably the Thresher rests on the ocean's bottom. Her fate recalls a happier one that of the Squalus in 1939. With a diving bell the Navy was able to rescue the 33 men who were still alive. "OSCAR" AWARDS:GREGORY PECK IS BEST ACTOR The most glamorous night in glamorous Hollywood draws a glittering crowd - the 35th annual Academy Awards. There's an air of electrified anticipation among the stars, including Angie Dickinson, Gregory Peck's new leading lady in "Captain Newman, M. D." The awards go to Ed Begley, Patty Duke, Anne Bancroft and Gregory Peck with the crowd giving an ovation to Mr. Peck, an extremely popular figure in movie circles who had been nominated before only to lose out. His performance in "To Kill A Mockingbird" however, shoots him to the top of the "Oscar" heap. The picture in which he starred also won two other awards.

Title:
Frank Crowther papers, 1955-1976 [manuscript].
The collection includes drafts of an unfinished autobiography, "Give Me a Ticket to Wherever It Is," screenplays, essays, short stories, and articles by Crowther; correspondence; and other material. Shorter writings by Crowther constitute the bulk of the papers; many are unpublished commentaries on life in New York City literary circles in the 1960s. Included among the shorter writings are interviews with John Cassavetes and Larry McMurtry. The collection also includes photographs, presumably taken in relation to the American Film Institute, that feature actors Sidney Poitier, Gregory Peck, and Helen Hayes. Correspondence in the collection deals with various writing projects and other activities.

Title:
Moving Images Related to Presidential Campaigns in 1960, 1964, and 1968, ca. 1960 - ca. 1968
This series contains moving images related to the Democratic Presidential campaigns of the 1960s, primarily television advertisements and campaign films. The films include campaign materials in support of the John F. Kennedy-Lyndon B. Johnson ticket in 1960; the Lyndon B. Johnson-Hubert H. Humphrey ticket in 1964; and the Hubert H. Humphrey-Edmund S. Muskie campaign in 1968. Most of the materials relate to the 1960 and 1964 campaigns. Republican opponents discussed in the films include Richard M. Nixon and Barry M. Goldwater. Some of the films and advertisements address specific themes, such as poverty, Medicare, education, nuclear weapons, civil rights, and social security. Many of the films contain clips of speeches by the candidates or endorsements from others, including actor Gregory Peck and Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy. The television advertisements in this series include the famous "Peace, Little Girl," more commonly known as "the Daisy Ad," which shows a child pulling petals from a daisy and a nuclear bomb explosion.

Selznick, David O., 1902-1965. Studio archive, 1904-1980 (bulk 1936-1955).
Title:
Studio archive, 1904-1980 (bulk 1936-1955).
Contains records documenting every aspect of David O. Selznick's Hollywood studio operations including script development, production, publicity, finances, and distribution. The records follow film's pioneer days in New York through the heyday of the studio system in Hollywood, to the rise of television. Besides Selznick's independent productions such as A Star is Born (1937), Gone with the Wind (1939), and Rebecca (1940), the archive documents his association with three major studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Paramount, and RKO. Arranged according to the departmental division of Selznick's studio, the archive traces the evolution of films from story purchase through script development, casting, design, production, exploitation, distribution, and reissue. Though most of the materials document Selznick's independent career, there are also records concerning his personal affairs, his father's career, as well as films Selznick developed but never produced. The archive touches on virtually every major Hollywood person, studio, and event of the early 20th century. The archive is highlighted by David O. Selznick's personal files, found in Series I, and arranged in 28 sub-subseries. These records document Selznick's personal involvement in every aspect of his business and chronicle his life. Found in this subseries are clippings, confidential and personal files, coproduction and loanout files, correspondence, calendars, financial and legal files, interoffice files, MGM, Paramount, and RKO files, Myron Selznick estate files, photographs, safe deposit files, story files, talent files, and writers files.
