McDonald, Cornelia Peake, 1822-1909. A diary with reminiscences of the war and refugee life in the Shenandoah Valley, 1860-1865, 1934 [manuscript].

Cornelia Peake McDonald kept a diary during the Civil War (1861-1865) at her husband's request, but some entries were written between the lines of printed books due to a shortage of paper and other entries were lost. In 1875, she assembled her scattered notes and records of the war period into a blank book to leave to her children. This combination diary and memoir was annotated and supplemented with further biographical material about the family by her son, Hunter McDonald, in 1934 and published by Cullom and Chertner Co. of Nashville. The diary entries describe civilian life in Winchester, Va., occupation by Confederate troops prior to 1st Manassas, her husband's war experiences, the Valley campaigns and occupation of Winchester and her home by Union troops, the death of her baby girl, the family's "refugee life" in Lexington, reports of battles elsewhere and news of family and friends in the army. Appendices contain further accounts of Angus McDonald's early life and war experiences, including mistreatment in prison by David H. Strother.

The collection holds disparate letters and documents pertaining to both military and naval officials, and civilians, active during the Civil War. There are small groups of material relating to the careers of five Union men who functioned at various levels in the war: an army colonel, William Watts Hart Davis; a navy surgeon, James McClelland; a soldier from Philadelphia, J. Ridgway Moore; an army general, Lovell Harrison Rousseau; and a Union spy, Richard Wilcox. There are also ten prisoner-of-war letters written by Confederate soldiers being held in Indianapolis, IN, and Columbus, OH. Much of the material was removed from military office files during the war and sent to the collector, John A. McAllister in Philadelphia.

Lane, William. Papers of William Lane [manuscript], 1776-1865.

The papers include correspondence and receipts, 1776-1777, regarding the medical care, board of, and supplies for troops under the command of William Lane while stationed in Georgia, including the rental of horses; and a memorandum, ca. 1776, of expenses relating to raising and marching Lane's troops from Virginia to Georgia. The papers also include two claims, 1786, from residents of King and Queen County, Va., for the provisioning of a gun and a steer, respectively, to the Virginia Militia; and two summons, 1809 and 1813, to appear before the justice of the peace in Fairfax County, Va., for the settlement of debts. The papers also contain an indenture, 1784 August 3, between Richard Thomas and Humphrey Temple of King and Queen County for lots in the town of Walkerton, and a commission, 1797 December 22, to examine Mrs. Jane Tunstall regarding her consent to a land sale. The papers also include a memorandum, ca. 1865?, by Col. Angus William McDonald, C.S.A.. listing New York guards who were kind to him during his imprisonment at the Atheneum Prison, Wheeling, W. Va.
