Nierenberg, William Aaron, 1919-2000. Papers, 1932-1986.
Title:
Papers, 1932-1986.
The papers include correspondence, subject files, lectures and addresses, awards, citations and certificates, telephone notes, office calendars and personal appointment books, audio and video tape recordings, photographs, slides and other material documenting the career of William Nierenberg. The collection contains material dated 1932-1986 but consists largely of personal papers covering the years 1965-1968, when Nierenberg was Director the of Scripps Institution of Oceanography. There is also material documenting Nierenberg's work at the University of California, Berkeley, including correspondence, lecture notes, and committee service. Records related to his leadership role in the Atomic Beams Research Group are very limited. The collection includes almost nothing regarding either Nierenberg's tenure at the University of Michigan or his contributions to the Manhattan Project. The papers provide extensive documentation of Nierenberg's participation in professional and scientific associations, his consulting activities and wide-ranging government service, and his participation in international scientific forums. There is some information regarding the JASONS but little about Nierenberg's individual contributions to this group. His activities as a member of the National Research Council's Climate Research Board, the National Advisory Committee on Oceans and Atmosphere, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Advisory Committee, the National Science Foundation Committee on International Science, and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Acid Rain Review Panel are amply covered. The collection includes files regarding Nierenberg's long association with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. His role as NATO Science Advisor, particularly his part in the development of the International Institute of Science and Technology is well documented. Nierenberg's service on governing boards of the American Friends of Tel Aviv University, the Center for Naval Analyses, the La Jolla Institute, and other organizations is covered. The collection includes correspondence and committee records related to Nierenberg's role as a UCSD vice chancellor and member of the Physics Department. There are also files covering his participation in local civic groups, his social engagements, and his personal travel. The collection includes personnel records, such as tenure and promotion reviews, that are restricted.

Title:
The Manhattan Project oral history interviews [videorecording] / 1987-1990.
Stanley Goldberg, consulting historian for the National Museum of American History, recorded eighteen video sessions with fifty-five participants involved in the engineering, physics, and culmination of the Manhattan Project. Goldberg examined the research and technologies necessary to realize the uranium and plutonium bombs. He supplemented interviews with visual documentation of the industrial plants that refined and separated the isotopes, and of the machinery that delivered and dropped the bombs. Interviewees explained the other steps of designing, building, testing and detonating an atomic bomb. Discussions with participants also elicited a social history of the Project as recalled by men and women with different duties in different locales. Between January 1987 and June 1990 the sessions were recorded on-site or in-studio in Hanford, Washington; Boston, Massachusetts; Oak Ridge and Louisville, Tennessee; Alamogordo and Los Alamos, New Mexico; Washington, DC; and Suitland, Maryland. The sessions are divided into five collection divisions: Hanford, Oak Ridge, Cambridge, Los Alamos, and Alberta.

American Institute of Physics. Office of the Director. Records of Elmer Hutchisson, 1948-1966, (bulk 1957-1964)
Title:
Records of Elmer Hutchisson, 1948-1966, (bulk 1957-1964)
Correspondence; reports; printed matter; memoranda; grant proposals; drafts of articles; speeches; minutes of meetings. The records of Hutchisson, director of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) (1957-1964) are primarily from his tenure as director, a period of enormous growth at the AIP with the initiation of the Education Department, the history of physics project, the Documentation Research Project, and a major increase in journal publication, particularly Soviet translation journals. The collection focuses on the areas of Hutchisson's particular interests: science education including various projects to improve physics teaching at all levels and increase the public understanding of physics; physics history including the creation of the Niels Bohr Library; journal publication including internal examination of publishing procedures at AIP, and an evaluation of SCIENCE ABSTRACTS. The largest series reflects Hutchisson's activities in the scientific community at large with correspondence discussing educational and scientific legislation and funding, and international cooperation on scientific matters. Other material concerns AIP awards, organizational structure and operations with coverage of the revision of the constitution and bylaws to create associate member society status and of the physical expansion at the new headquarters; public relations activities with press releases and files on seminars for science writers; the development of citation indexing; and the placement of physics graduates. Files of the Member Societies: Acoustical Society of America, American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), American Physical Society (APS), Optical Society of America, and Society of Rheology, are mostly informational copies, although the APS and AAPT files contain some substantive correspondence. Also contains speeches, reprints, personal correspondence, and correspondence concerning Hutchisson's involvement with the AIP in capacities other than director. Correspondents include: Henry A. Barton, W. Kenneth Brasher. Ferdinand G. Brickwedde, Karl K. Darrow, John Henry Dillon, George F. Gainsborough, Grant O. Gale, Conyers Herring, William C. Kelly, W. James King, Robert E. Maizell, Thomas Harris Osgood, Shirley Leon Quimby, Norman Foster Ramsey, Raymond John Seeger, Frederick Seitz, Wallace Waterfall, Robert T. Webber, and Hugh Wolfe.
