These papers consist of correspondence concerning temperature, wind, and weather reports of the Hudson Bay region, 1848; resolutions of condolence to Coffin's son, Seldon J. Coffin, from students and alumni of Lafayette College after Coffin's death, 1873; newspaper articles; an illustration of James H. Coffin; and the original manuscript of Winds of the Northern Hemisphere. Additional correspondence of James Henry Coffin exists elsewhere in the Smithsonian Institution Archives, especially in the Joseph Henry Collection, Record Unit 7001, and Meteorological Project Records, Record Unit 60.

Papers documenting Van der Weyde's personal and business affairs and the development of the Thomas Paine National Historical Association from its founding in 1884 to the construction of the Paine Memorial Building in New Rochelle, 1925-1926. Included are incoming letters from his sister Gertrude, his three wives, other relatives, and friends, 1898-1929; letters to John E. Remsburg from other Paine scholars, 1909-1919, used by Van der Weyde in his research on Paine; notes to his wife Katherine, 1907-1929; his poetry manuscripts which he published under the name of William Manley; incoming letters concerning his business affairs and intellectual interests, 1899-1929; correspondents include Thaddeus B. Wakeman, Moncure Conway, and John E. Remsburg; minutes, constitution, pamphlets, correspondence, and bills of the Thomas Paine National Historical Association, 1884-l929; photographs by Van der Weyde, ca. 1870-1929, including night views of London, Paris, and Pittsburgh, and character studies of Mark Twain, O. Henry, Eugene V. Debs, Thomas Edison, and Walt Whitman; and clippings, articles, pamphlets, and other printed matter, 1821-1927, on Thomas Paine, photography, and other subjects. Papers also include some cabinet portraits of British subjects taken by his uncle Henry Van der Weyde.
