The papers include audio tapes, blueprints, certificates, correspondence, clippings, day-timers, drafts and research files related to "Clemson: an Informal History of the University 1889-1979;" file cards, maps, newspapers, phonograph records, photographs, posters, programs, prints, reprints from newspapers, subject files, and a VHS tape. The papers date from 1890-1991, with the bulk of the collection dating from 1931-1991. Most of the correspondence is from 1953-1991, and that of the subject files is from 1931-1974. The bulk of the Tri-centennial Commission files and book papers span shorter periods of time, 1967-1972 and 1976-1979 respectively. The material relates to Bryan's career as a journalist, newspaper editor, Clemson administrator and historian as well as his experience as a prisoner of war and a member of the South Carolina Tri-centennial Commission. Bryan served as a member of the South Carolina Tri-centennial Commission and collected news articles as well as keeping his own papers about that organization's activities. After retiring from Clemson, Bryan devoted himself to completing a history of Clemson. The bulk of the correspondence is focused upon those periods when Bryan accepted new jobs (1953 and 1963), retired (1970-1971) or died (1991) with congratulatory, well wishes and condolences from family, friends and business associates. Some more substantive correspondence with Robert C. Edwards, Jenkin Lloyd Jones, Ben Robertson, Wallace Trevillian, and Donald Whitehead can be found in the subject files. The subject files document aspects of Bryan's career as a journalist, particularly his experiences during World War II when he served as war correspondent for "The Atlanta Journal" and NBC. Included are copies of some of his articles and transcripts of his radio broadcasts as well as material related to his experiences as a prisoner-of-war. The subject files include a large number of newspaper and magazine clippings related to topics of interest to Bryan. They contain material about the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Gridiron Club, and other newspaper associations in which Bryan participated. There are some papers concerning his friendships with fellow journalists as well as substantial clippings files about the freedom of the press, some major publishers and newspapers in the United States, and World War II and D-Day in particular. The subject files contain further information about Clemson, primarily related to Bryan's activities as Vice President for Development and alumnus. There is some information about his father Arthur Buist Bryan and the Bryan family. The South Carolina Tri-centennial Commission files include many newspaper clippings about the activities of the Commission, minutes and reports, printed material, and some correspondence. The celebration of the state tri-centennial served as a catalyst for a variety of activities and projects that were successful to varying degrees. There are several drafts and proof sheets of "Clemson: an Informal History of the University, 1889-1979" as well as some correspondence and research notes. Bryan collected some early published material about Clemson's history that is also included as well as card files for Clemson subjects and individuals. Many aspects of Clemson University are covered in the collection including: alumni and alumnae, faculty, history, presidents, and the School of Textiles.

This series contains an assortment of records of the Office of Professional Development. The bulk of these records are the workbooks for professional development courses. The folder inventory, formatted in a spreadsheet format in Microsoft Excel 97, allows sorting of Seminar Workbooks by Number and Title. The main correspondents are directors Ralph D. Elliot, 1971-1986; William C. Laffoday, 1968-1972; and administrative assistant Helena C. Douglas, 1981-1987. Other correspondents include Charles V. Wray, Coordinator, and Hassan El-Behery, Acting Director, and Wallace D. Trevillian (Dean) of the College of Industrial Management and Textile Science. The records consist of correspondence, workbooks, brochures, publications and photographs. The content of the correspondence relates to departmental matters, publicity, mailings, direct mail marketing, preparation of workshops, participation of speakers, the Textile Marketing Forums, and "The Textile Marketing Letter". The workbooks were distributed to students and include agendas for seminars and courses, handouts and biographies of speakers. The brochures and pamphlets give detailed information concerning the programs. Catalogs of the courses were published but are not found in this series. They have received Library of Congress classification. [See online catalog for call number and location]. "The Textile Marketing Letter" was first published in January 1966. These have been found and cataloged and are not found in this series. [See online for call number and location] Chirurg & Cairns, Inc., the advertising and public relations firm which established the "Letter" in January 1966 as a necessary service to the textile industry, conveyed the entire publishing property as a gift to Clemson University. In May 1970 "The Textile Marketing Letter" became the property of the School of Industrial Management and Textile Science of Clemson University. It ceased publication in 1981. Among the publications will be found the departmental annual reports for the years 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969-1970, 1974-1975, 1976-1977, 1978-1979. The photographs document various aspects of professional development courses and seminars. These pictures include class photographs, social events, receptions, speakers, and seminars. For preservation purposes, the photographs were removed from the paper files, enclosed in plastic sleeves and placed at the end of the series.

The files, which are arranged alphabetically by topic, span the years 1951-1975, the bulk occurring 1962-1969. Prominent correspondents with Wallace D. Trevillian, Dean, included textile mill executives, Clemson University administrators and faculty, and officers of professional societies and organizations.

This series contains tape recordings produced by the Clemson University Communications Center, 1966-1979. The recordings consist primarily of interviews with administrators, professors, and students on a variety of topics. The recordings were distributed for weekly broadcast to radio stations throughout the state of South Carolina. Several recordings have brief descriptions. Harry Durham, Director of University Communications Center, conducted most of the interviews.

This collection contains 39 audiocassette tapes and 1 letter sized archival box of manuscript materials which document interviews conducted in the mid-1980s by Joseph C. Ellers for his book, "Getting To Know Clemson University Is Quite An Education: Determination Makes Dreams Come True." The interviews commonly follow a pattern of discussing the education of the interviewee, how they came to be at Clemson, and general recollections within the departments they were affiliated with while employed at the University. This series consists of a portion of the records of the Industrial Management Department. The bulk of records, created by Wallace D. Trevillian who chaired the department from 1955 until 1964, span the years 1960-1972. The records do not contain the correspondence of department chairmen Clinton Whitehurst, 1965-1974, and B.J. Todd, July 1974-1982; their correspondence may be found in Series 55 and Series 56. The series contains general and subject correspondence, speeches delivered by Trevillian, departmental self-studies, news releases, newspaper clippings from a scrapbook kept by Trevillian, publications issued by the Industrial Management department, and photographs. One noteworthy run of folders contains the report of a space and occupancy study conducted in 1957-1958 of buildings on the Clemson College campus.

This series contains the records of the Dean and Associate Dean of the College of Commerce and Industry (formerly called the College of Industrial Management and Textile Science). The majority of files are those of Ryan C. Amacher, Dean, and Thomas D. Efland, Associate and Acting Dean. Also found in the series are files of Amacher's predecessor, Wallace D. Trevillian. The folders, which are arranged alphabetically by subject, span the years 1969-1990. The records consist of correspondence, minutes (both college and departmental), annual reports, budget documents, reports, publications, and photographs. They were produced by the departments within the College: Accountancy, Economics, Finance, Management, and Textiles. The records also document other activities affiliated with the college, for example, the Office of Professional Development, the Frank L. Roddey Small Business Development Center, and the J.E. Sirrine Textile Foundation. Correspondents include Clemson Presidents Bill Atchley, Walter Cox, and Max Lennon, and representatives of various textile organizations.
