Letter copy book kept by the British Envoy, an Italian, concerning a projected marriage between the Duke of York and the Archduchess Claudia Felicitas, addressed principally to Lord Arlington, the Duke of York, the Earl of Sunderland, Sir William Godolphin, the King, Sir Joseph Williamson, the Duke of Richmond, Sir William Swan, Lord Clifford, Sir Jonathan Trelawny and various ambassadors. A leaf pasted inside the cover, giving styles of address, includes the abbot of Lambspring; in 1672 the abbot was John Placid Gascoigne. One letter is from the emperor Leopold to Claudia's mother and another from the Earl of Peterborough to the King. At the end is a summary of the times of various postal services in Europe and a list of letters written, March 14 to December 29. Thought to be written by Bernard Gascoigne, the English resident at Vienna.

Fell in 1859. Letters include those from his second cousin, Adlai E. Stevenson, from Alfred Leslie Rowse, and John Kielty, Secretary of the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches.

Contains 39 autograph and non-autograph letters signed bound together to form a volume entitled on the spine: M.S. Official letters from 1668-1679. Correspondents include: Arlington, Sir Joseph Williamson, Henry Coventry, Henry Thynne and William Blathwayt. Also, 2 copies of letters from Arlington to Sir Robert Southwell, 1668, and to Henry Coventry, 1677. Some of these letters may appear in Letters from the Secretaries of State ... in the reign of King Charles the Second to Francis Parry ... 1817. Tipped in at the back are a coachmaker's bill, 1667-1668, a household bill, ca. 1675 and a note on Elizabeth Southwell, daughter of Sir Robert Southwell of Wood Rising, Norfolk.

The Carlingford papers contain correspondence anddiplomatic and other papers, mostly relating to Theobald Taaffe, 1st Earl ofCarlingford. 24 letters signed in cipher from Charles II to Carlingforddocument the King's personal and political activities in the last years of hisexile; other correspondence and papers concern Carlingford's diplomatic missionduring the second Anglo-Dutch War, including letters by Henry Bennet, Earl ofArlington, Sir William Swan, and Sir William Temple. Other family papersinclude a letter concerning Carlingford's death and letters by Francis Taaffe,3rd Earl of Carlingford, describing his military service with the Duke ofLorraine's regiment during the 1670s and 1680s.

Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, of about 45 entries consisting of letters in Latin, poems in Latin and English, translations, and speeches compiled by an undergraduate at University College Oxford. The 26 epistolae are addressed to scholars and college heads such as Thomas Bennet, Gabriel Barniby, John Hudson, Arthur Charlett, John Hinckley, and Edward Farrar. Other items in the manuscript include poems such as The Passion, an Ode; a poem on the Nine Worthies; and an English translation of an ode by Horace; as well as an address in Latin to Sir Joseph Williamson and essays on Aristotle and Virgil.

Collection of newsletters issued on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays by the Secretary of State's office as official newsletter sent chiefly to agents, but also to certain subcribers. Newletters were started by Sir Joseph Williamson during the period he was Undersecretary of State (1660-1674) and Secretary of State for the Northern Department (1674-1679). The newsletters continued to be sent by others from this office, and the ones in this collection were addressed to three successive generations of the Newdigate family of Arbury Hall, Warwickshire: Sir Richard Newdigate, 1st baronet, Sir Richard Newdigate, 2nd baronet, and Sir Richard Newdigate, 3rd baronet. Topics of interest consist of the Stuart courts and those of most of Europe; social, diplomatic, and military history; parliamentary news; commercial and maritime relations, particularly those with the colonies in North America and both the West and East Indies.
