Correspondents include: Arlington, Sir Joseph Williamson, Henry Coventry, Henry Thynne and William Blathwayt. Also, 2 copies of letters from Arlington to Sir Robert Southwell, 1668, and to Henry Coventry, 1677. Some of these letters may appear in Letters from the Secretaries of State ... in the reign of King Charles the Second to Francis Parry ... 1817. Tipped in at the back are a coachmaker's bill, 1667-1668, a household bill, ca. 1675 and a note on Elizabeth Southwell, daughter of Sir Robert Southwell of Wood Rising, Norfolk.

Robert Southwell was born near Kinsale, Ireland, and educated at Queen's College, Oxford. Knighted in 1665 and appointed envoy to the court of Portugal, Southwell successfully concluded the Peace of Lisbon in 1668. He held several other diplomatic posts under James II, including envoy to Lisbon again, and then to Brussels and Brandenburg.
