Comprises 1 autograph letter from William Dowton to [Robert] Keel[e]y, undated (with a transcript), and 2 printed portraits of William Dowton, one engraved by T. Blood from an original painting by S. Drummond, and published in London for the European Magazine by J. Asperne Cornhill on 1 March 1813, the other depicting 'the late Mr. Dowton as Dr. Cantwell' shortly after his death in 1851 and giving his date of birth as 25 April 1763, his date of death as 19 April 1851, and his age at death as 88 years, thus differing from the other sources. The bound volume includes a biography of Dowton which is much fuller than that contained in the Dictionary of National Biography.

Stating the required terms of his employment contract. Can be with the recipient next Monday for four nights, 12 pounds for three nights and half of the fourth as a Benefit. Letter addressed "Dear Sir." With a small newspaper clipping describing Dowton, and engraving of "Mr. Dowton as Sir Anthony Absolute" (drawn and engraved by R. Page. London: Published by T & I. Elvey, Castle St., Holborn, March 15, 1824).

Part I. Part of Falstaff for Shakespeare's King Henry IV. Note by William Dowton that this was "Mr [James] Quins Part of Falstaff - given by Mr. Garrick to Mr. T[Thomas] King and by Mr. King to W. Dowton in 1798." However, the part book was probably prepared for Thomas King who played Falstaff at the Haymarket, August-September 1792, his only appearance in that part.

Album of theatrical portraits or scenes, in graphite, by Samuel De Wilde. All drawings are undated and unsigned, but the album itself has spine title: De Wilde, original drawings, 1788-1832. The only other evidence of date is a watermark in the paper of the final drawing, dated 1831. The drawings are infrequently captioned, and some of the captions are partially illegible. Based on the available captions, there appear to be several drawings of scenes from Love in a Village, depicting the characters of Justice Woodcock and Debra Woodwock. The role of Justice Woodcock may be played by the actor William Dowton (cf. Highfill, A biographical dictionary). Dowton may also be depicted as Dr. Cantwell in The Hypocrite (ca. 1812). Other drawings include many scenes of fashionable young ladies, two variations of a scene in a farrier's shop, a pair of hunters, a young lady at the harp, "Flirting", "John and Henry Harte" (young children), and several sheets with multiple studies of heads. All drawings are in graphite alone. All are relatively finished and probably served as preliminary sketches for paintings by De Wilde. The drawings are executed on separate sheets of paper that have been tipped in to the album. They vary in size from about 15 x 13 to 27 x 24 cm. Many leaves of the album are blank, and it appears that a number of drawings may have been removed, perhaps by a previous owner.
