Among the letters are 12 to assorted correspondents, 6 to Jean Charlot, 12 to Louise and Frederic Luce, Maximilien's son and daughter-in-law. Many of the letters include sketches in pencil and ink. The letters generally concern personal matters with some mention of work in progress. One letter to Charlot contains brief references to paintings seen during travels, while one letter to Aynaud mentions plans to visit Holland with van Dongen and Ludovic-Rodo (n.d.). Other correspondents are Miguet, Oulevey, Charles Remond and Camille Pissarro. In addition to the drawings on his letters, there are 11 separate small sketches by Luce done in pencil and ink, with 2 in watercolor. The sketches include seascapes, landscapes, and figure drawings. Among the 25 letters sent to unidentified persons, one written in English on Hotel Martin, N.Y. letterhead is most interesting. It contains, in a condensed style, information about his present and previous trips to the U.S., followed by all the activities he has planned for his stay in New York, including the sights he intends to paint [Jan. 1899]. Among the 17 letters received, the most important are the five letters from Gustave Geffroy, about his portrait by Raffaëlli, their long friendship, and his book about Clemenceau (ca. 1910-1919); a letter from Edmond de Goncourt, accepting a 15-day sitting for a full-size portrait (1888); and letters from Claude Monet, Joris-Karl Huysmans, Robert de Montesquiou, and Jean Richepin. Series II. The manuscripts include 16 items, of which 6 are fragmentary texts; most have no titles. Three signed manuscripts were addressed to Georges Montorgeuil at the newspaper Eclair: two are predictions of the German defeat (1915, 1916), and the third is a nostalgic reminiscing about the Paris fortifications soon to be demolished (1918). Fragmentary texts are about the politics of hatred between France and Germany [1899], the history of the ruling classes in France, the effect of machines in future society, and the "Chinese danger." A sharp criticism of the Salon des Champs Elysées was mailed to the Grand journal (1896). The literary essays include one about a visit to a madhouse, and "Le chemineau aux étoiles," a poetical vision of Rafaëlli's familiar character, the tramp. A 12-page manuscript "Les petites marchandes des rues," signed by Henry Gréville, was written for Raffaëlli's illustrated book "Les types de Paris" (1888). Series III. Of special interest are the lists of Raffaëlli's art works, including titles and prices (8 p.). Series IV. The 49 items of printed materials include a rare copy of the print "Le cheval dans la plaine" made for an article of Ajalbert; a full-size lithograph portrait of Raffaëlli by A. Villette; the reproduction of a wood engraved bust of the artist, with 6 verses and a small profile in ink added below, signed; and a photograph of Raffaëlli seated, with palette and brush in hands, which he copied in his drypoint self-portrait of 1895. Series V. The seven publications include a small catalog of Raffaëlli's exhibition in New York, which reproduces his portrait by E.A. Abbey, dated Feb. 1895, followed by a 4-page manuscript of the artist in facsimile; and the auction catalog of Raffaëlli's estate sold at Drouot in 1924, after the artist's death.

Letters from more than 50 artists and art critics primarily concerning the publication of the print portfolio, L'Estampe originale, but also referring to projects for illustrated books, monographs on art, exhibitions and art criticism. Most letters are addressed to Andre Marty, although a few are to his junior partner, Henri Floury. Included in the collection are two short manuscripts on the decorative arts, by Gustave Geffroy and Octave Uzanne. The letters relating to L'Estampe originale (1893-1895) provide detailed technical information about print states, color, choice of paper, and preferences for particular printers and engravers. They also chronicle the vicissitudes of artistic and journalistic collaboration and offer some clues as to the publisher's marketing strategies. Of particular interest are letters from Georges Auriol (5) about his designs for decorative borders; from the sculptor Alexandre Charpentier (16) discussing his innovative "timbre sec," and dickering over prices; from Maximilen Luce (1) with instructions for printing engravings; from Monet (1) expressing uncertainty about working in lithography; from Roger Marx (23) concerning his preface and the promotion of the portfolios; from Van Rysselberghe (1) promising to enlist other Belgian artists; from Lucien Pissarro (13) about distribution of the publication in England, and his own prints; and from Felix Vallotton (1) regarding control over editions and financial terms. Among the letters containing comments on specific prints and details on technical matters are those from Carriere (13); Signac (1); Joseph Pennell (6); Camille Pissarro (8); and Felicien Rops (3). There are also some from artists who plan to withdraw from the project; for example, Zandomeneghi, Blanche, Khnopff, and Duez. Letters treating other subjects include five from Paul Ranson (n.d.) discussing wallpaper and tapestry designs; letters of 1897 from Ernest Chaplet and Auguste Delaherche about a ceramics exhibition sponsored by Le Figaro; a long, detailed letter from Gabriel Mourey (1893) discussing his plans for a series of monographs on contemporary French and British artists; seven letters (1894-99) from Lucien Pissarro about projects for illustrated books; 2 letters from Paul Signac (1894, n.d.) and a file of letters (34) from Gustave Geffroy on various journalistic matters, including the publication of his collected criticism and the brochure promoting his project for a "Musee du soir." A sketch by Carriere for the cover of the brochure is also included in the collection. In addition to Geffroy and Marx, critics represented by significant groups of letters are Arsene Alexandre, Henry Nocq, Moreau-Nelaton, Thadee Natanson, Felix Feneon, Frantz Jourdain, and Emile Verhaeren. A three-page draft manuscript (n.d.) by Octave Uzanne concerns the subject of art and industry and functionalism in the decorative arts. A one page manuscript by Geffroy (1899) is an open letter to the Director of Fine Arts advocating independent exhibition by decorative artists for the World's Fair of 1900. The collection also includes, under restricted use, photocopies of complementary material dispersed from the Marty archive.

An active promoter of the decorative arts, Champier edited L'Année artistique, founded and directed La Revue des arts décoratifs, was involved with the creation of the Union central des arts décoratifs and the founding of France's Musée des arts décoratifs, and was a key figure in planning the Expositions universelles of 1889 and 1900.
