Ethnologist.
Frank Hamilton Cushing was an ethnographer and early participant observer to the Pueblo of Zuni, where he lived from 1879-1884. He was adopted into the Zuni tribe. During the late 1880's he interested wealthy socialite Mary Hemenway into funding an archaeological expedition to find the origins of the Zuni people. The project began in 1887 with the excavation at Los Muertos, AZ and then moved to the Zuni Reservation. Cushing became ill and was removed from the Project in 1889. He continued to work for the Bureau of American Ethnology during this time and until his death in 1900. He also worked on the Pepper-Hearst Archaeological Expedition to Florida (1891-1896) where they excavated the Key Marcos site.
American ethnologist who worked for the Bureau of Ethnology, Smithsonian Institution.
Frank H. Cushing was an ethnologist who lived with and wrote about the Zuni, in the latter part of the 19th century.

Title:
Culin Archival Collection 1871-1933 1903-1928 (bulk).
The collection documents Culin's life and work; his role in developing the collections of the Department of Ethnology at The Brooklyn Museum; his efforts to present the collections to the public through exhibitions, installations, and public programs; and his research on Native American, Asian, and Eastern European cultures. The materials found here are a composite of personal papers and institutional records, primarily covering Culin's tenure at The Brooklyn Museum (1903-1928), but also relating to his earlier work at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Some Brooklyn Museum records predate or postdate Culin's years at the Museum, indicating this collection's role as a segment of the Records of the Department of the Arts of Africa, the Pacific and the Americas.

Sawyer, Wells, 1863-1960. Wells M. Sawyer Collection, 1893-1961.
Title:
Wells M. Sawyer Collection, 1893-1961.
This collection contains Wells M. Sawyer's personal correspondence, photographs, drawings (including sketches on several of the letters), watercolors, news clippings, and notes and other materials pertaining to the Pepper-Hearst Expedition of 1896. This collection is useful to researchers interested in the life and artistic career of Sawyer, particularly his role as a member of Pepper-Hearst Expedition. Although the collection spans his entire life and covers many important events, the collection is not comprehensive and has numerous gaps. For example, Sawyer's sketches primarily date from his later travels (circa 1920-1947), and there are only two examples of his watercolors. His personal correspondence includes photocopies and transcriptions of original and duplicate copies, and some pages are missing from the correspondence. The Pepper-Hearst Expedition papers primarily consist of Sawyer's own draft report on the expedition, as well as his correspondenc, and field notes. The folders also include a few Frank Hamilton Cushing letters and newspaper clippings. One folder contains a catalog of the photographs that Sawyer took on the expedition (the actual negatives are kept at the Smithsonian Institute and are not present in the University of Florida collection). Additionally, some photographs mentioned in the Pepper-Hearst correspondence are not enclosed with the corresponding letter and are not in the collection.

Title:
Correspondence and notes relating to frontier artists Carvalho, Cushing, Eakins, Egloffstein, Holmes, Moran [microform] / Robert Taft. [1858-1953]
This collection consists mainly of correspondence and notes of Dr. Robert Taft relating to the preparation of his book "Artists and Illustrators of the Old West" (New York : Scribner, 1953). A highlight of this collection is the inclusion of part of the journal kept by Balduin Möllhausen, who accompanied the expedition of Joseph C. Ives in 1858, which traversed northern Arizona and the Grand Canyon region, at one point actually descending to the Colorado River via Diamond Creek. In fact, much of the volume of this collection concerns Mr. Möllhausen and the attempts by Dr. Taft to gather biographical information about him.

Title:
Culin Archival Collection Series 9: Brinton memorial 1875-1902 1899-1902 (bulk).
Series 9 relates to University of Pennsylvania Professor of Anthropology Daniel Garrison Brinton (1837-99), who was Culin's mentor and guide in the study of Native American language and mythology. After Brinton's death, Culin worked with Helen Abbott Michael (a chemist and writer associated with Brinton) and Sarah Brinton (the widow) to organize memorial observances and establish a Brinton Chair of American Archaeology and Ethnology at the University of Pennsylvania. In the course of preparing the memorial, Culin collected documentation including notes, articles, correspondence and clippings for a biography and bibliography of Brinton's works. Typescripts provide a more synthesized version of this material. Invitations, programs, resolutions and announcements for a series of memorial meetings in Philadelphia supplement the correspondence.
