Shaw Lecture Series in Civil Engineering. Civil engineering at North Carolina State University began as part of the Mechanics Course, which was first taught in 1889. In 1895 the Mechanics Course separated into civil engineering and mathematics when Wallace Carl Riddick became the first professor of civil engineering. Civil engineering became a separate department in 1906. The Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD) accredited the civil engineering curriculum in 1937 and renewed the accreditation in 1949.

The William Joseph Peele Papers, 1888-1923, contain items relating to Peele's tenure on the Board of Trustees at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) between 1899 and 1901. The majority of material details administrative topics discussed and changes made during that period. A small number of personal materials are also included. William Joseph Peele (1855-1919) was a lawyer, an author, and an active participant in organizing state history agencies. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1879. As one of the founders of the Watauga Club, Peele was instrumental in the establishment of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts.

Papers of Wallace C. Riddick (1864-1942), professor of civil engineering and administrator at North Carolina State College, Raleigh, N.C., 1892-1937, and of Riddick's nephew, Ivy G. Riddick (1890-1956), an agent of the British-American Tobacco Company, Shanghai, China, 1918-1943, and his wife, Margaret. Wallace Riddick's material consists largely of items relating to land he bought and sold in Wake County, N.C., but includes some items relating to N.C. State College and engineering education. Papers of Ivy Riddick and his wife include personal letters discussing conditions in Shanghai and the Philippines, 1939-1943, and some items relating to Riddick's employment by the British-American Tobacco Company. Also included are photograph albums and scrapbooks kept by the Riddicks in China.

Withers received his A.B. and A.M. from Davidson College, and did graduate work at Cornell University. He was a Professor of Pure and Agricultural Chemistry at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts from 1889-1923 and served as Acting Director of the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station from 1887 to 1899. From 1916 to 1923 he served as Vice President of North Carolina State College, and from 1917 to 1918 was president of the North Carolina Academy of Science.

The papers document Wallace Carl Riddick's involvement in the education of two Serbian students at North Carolina State University. The papers consist of reminiscences of Lillian Daniel Riddick, Riddick's wife, regarding the Serbian students; photographs of the two Serbian students from the Agromeck (1923) and an article about them in the News and Observer (18 May 1980). Also included are newsclippings; correspondence; a letter from John T. Caldwell to Anna Riddick regarding her donation of the Officer's Cross of the Order of St. Sava presented to Riddick by King Alexander the First of Yugoslavia (6 March 1931); and "Hitting the Line", an address by Riddick (7 September 1913).

Topics include military training and discipline, the naming of dormitories in honor of former students of the College who died overseas in the World War, budget records, and the consolidation of three North Carolina higher educational institutions. The records of the first five administrations range in date from 1891 to 1934. The “Early Chancellors” include the first five chief executives, or presidents, of first the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and then North Carolina State College. Alexander Quarles Holladay was the first chief executive of North Carolina College for Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (1889-1899). The second chief executive was George Tayloe Winston (1899-1908). The third chief executive was Daniel Harvey Hill, Jr. (1908-1916). Wallace Carl Riddick was the fourth chief executive of the College (1916-1923). Eugene Clyde Brooks was the fifth chief exective of the College (1923-1934).

Wallace Carl Riddick (1862-1942) served as President of North Carolina State College from 1916 to 1923. In 1920, he admitted two Serbian students to the College, which led to his being awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of St. Sava by King Alexander of Yugoslavia in 1931. The Wallace Carl Riddick Papers contain newspaper clippings, correspondence, and other materials related to the students, as well as the text of a speech given by Riddick in 1913.
