The microfilmed Paul Wayland Bartlett papers contain correspondence with family, artists, and others (1887-1925); legal and financial documents (1887-1925); printed materials (1888-1925); sketches, drawings, and blueprints (undated, 1916-1920); and certificates (1915-1918). Correspondence consists of a chronological series (1887-1925) containing letters and postcards from John White Alexander, Samuel P. Avery, William A. Clark, Frank Edwin Elwell, John Flanagan, Daniel Chester French, Henry-Bonnard Bronze Company, Gorham Company, J. Scott Hartley, John LaFarge, Charles Loring, Frederick MacMonnies, Charles Sprague Pearce, Auguste Rodin, Frederic Wellington Ruckstull, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and scattered letters from other nineteenth century artists regarding the execution of works, commissions, exhibitions and expositions in Paris and the United States, among them the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (1904) and the Exposition Universale (1899-1900), and Bartlett's illness and death in 1925. The remainder of the correspondence, arranged by subject, includes letters from Bartlett's father, Truman Howe Bartlett (1899-1913), many written from Boston where he taught in the architecture department of MIT, or from New Hampshire where he kept a studio, and letters to Paul regarding his father's entry in the National Cyclopedia of American Biography (1925); correspondence with the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers (1905-1907), some from Joseph Pennell, regarding exhibitions; correspondence regarding commissions, including Lafayette, McClellan, General Warren, Library of Congress, and other statues; postcards from artists (1892-1895); and miscellaneous letters. Legal documents relate to the Lafayette statue (1900) and also include Bartlett's death certificate. Financial records (1899-1922) consist of bank statements, checkbooks, bills and receipts for casting, photography, dues, and rent. Clippings and a scrapbook deal with Barlett's Lafayette statue. Other printed material includes articles on various Bartlett sculptures and other sculptors, exhibition catalogs, passes and announcements, yearbooks from the American Club of Paris (1905-1909), and material from the American Art Association of Paris, including a 20-page booklet by Bartlett giving the history of the group, and an invitation (1906) to an auction to benefit the victims of the San Francisco earthquake. Also included are sketches by Bartlett and his father (undated and circa 1913); oversized drawings, plans and prints for monuments, statues, and the Capitol ceiling (undated and 1916-1920); postcards depicting Bartlett's sculpture; and certificates from the National Academy of Design and the Panama Pacific International Exposition.

Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1927-1971, n.d.
These letters are written by the artist Jessie Warneke, the wife of the sculptor Heinz Warneke. Their work was represented at the Weyhe Gallery. Her lively correspondence with Carl Zigrosser concerns itself with life among the American artists living in Europe in the 1930's, their circle of mutual friends in the art world of New York, the progress of Heinz Warneke's work and his commissions, her own work and exhibitions, domestic news, their life as artist-farmers in Connecticut, life in Washington, the 1963 unveiling of a statue by Heinz at the Philadelphia Zoo, and their appreciation of Zigrosser's books. Later letters concern old times together and the subject of aging. Among the people mentioned in Jessie Warneke's letters are Mabel Dwight, Florence King, Erhard Weyhe, Roderick Seidenberg, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Katherine Schmidt (Schubert), John B. Flannagan, Harry Gottlieb, Andrée Ruellan, Alexander Calder, Aristide Maillol, Kuei T'eng, Emil Ganso, Mitchell Jamieson, E. Boyd, Henry Mitchell, Thomas W. Nason, A. R. Orage and Sadakichi Hartmann.

Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1926-1942, n.d.
The earliest correspondence concerns Flannagan's work on small pieces, sales, and exhibitions. Attentive and informative letters from 1928 written by Florence Rollins discuss Flannagan's problems in Woodstock, his inability to handle money or "behave decently," and his drinking. Miss Rollins had befriended Flannagan and let him live and work at her country place; her growing disillusionment is evident in her blunt letters. There are also reconciling letters from Flannagan to Rollins in the file that describe his life and his work. An exchange of letters from this time between Zigrosser and Juliana Force is the beginning of an informal alliance between the two to help arrange for sales of Flannagan's work. Flannagan's own letters often give simple, philosophical statements about the motivation of his work, his choice of subject and material. There is also misleading biographical information, references to sales, and requests for funds. Mid 1929 letters make reference to Jo Davidson and Grace Briggs, John Flannagan's future wife. Some letters are addressed to Laura Canadé, an employee of Weyhe Gallery and Carl Zigrosser's second wife. A March, 1930 contract sets up a purchase system at Weyhe, providing quarterly payments to Flannagan in return for the delivery of works of art. In June of 1930, Flannagan and his wife went to Ireland for a year's concerted work. Monthly letters give details about stone the available, setting up a household, his optimism about work and staying sober, financial arrangements, Ireland and the Irish, the complications of shipping his work, and the birth of his daughter. Flannagan's moods are quite changeable: each cheerful, optimistic letter full of plans is matched by one of nervous gloom full of plans, and another of miserable dejection. In April, 1931, the small family relocated to Paris, and in May of that year Grace and the baby left a horribly drunken Flannagan and returned to the United States. There is a gap in the correspondence until the spring of 1932, which brings a flurry of legal notices attempting to put a lien on Flannagan's work at the Weyhe Gallery. The next few letters from Flannagan are from 1934 and describe his work in metal casting and some carving projects. Early 1935 brings letters from Bloomingdale, a psychiatric hospital in New York City, where Flannagan is undergoing treatment for alcohol addiction and mental problems. The letters are desperate and unguarded. Flannagan worries about never being able to sculpt again, the removal of his teeth, and expresses his bitterness towards his wife and pleads his case to Zigrosser. By October of 1935, Flannagan is out of the hospital and living in Boston with Margharita La Centra, sculpting and making sales. April of 1936 brings a long letter about Flannagan's plan to purchase an old stone farmhouse near Woodstock, N.Y. with barns for sculpting in -- the purchase of which would require financial help from Erhard Weyhe. Zigrosser tried unsuccessfully to solicite help from other sources, including Chauncey Stillman, a well-to-do collector. Stillman's response is negative, but compassionate about helping Flannagan solve his personal problems. Flannagan's work was selling well at the time, but his underlying weaknesses remained unresolved. The letters from this time are excitable, full of plans, loaded down with financial problems and excuses for slow work. Letters from 1937 refer to Flannagan's hospitalization for a broken leg after he was struck by a car, and his recuperating in Ridgefield, Conn. at the home of Stephen Luce Brown. His work is slowed by his injury, and by the first symptoms of the recurring brain tumors that would complicate his last years. Other topics include a visit by Padraic Colum, Flannagan's feelings of lost time, his work on Jonah and the Whale (including a sketch of the sculpture), some comments on chemical coatings for his outdoor work, and the types and colors of stones he prefers. At this time, Flannagan's commission from the Fairmount Park Art Association of Philadelphia for his figure, the Miner, was coming to a head. A December, 1937 letter from Henri Marceau to Zigrosser reports of a meeting with the artist about the project at which Flannagan was not sober. Hospitalizations and recoveries create gaps in the letters from Flannagan. In 1939, his reduced stamina results in Flannagan working with metal casting instead of stone, and letters report his exhaustion and struggle with sobriety, as well as the infrequent sales of his work. 1940 brings fatalistic letters in which Flannagan writes about having a retrospective and comments on his poverty and how it effects his work. In July of that year, a postcard reports the sale at auction of all tools in Flannagan's "erstwhile studio." A letter to Zigrosser from Domenico Mortellito suggests making reproductions of Flannagan's work to get money for the artist. Letters for 1941 include a typescript of Flannagan's letters to Curt Valentin of Buchholz Gallery arranging sales and an exhibition. Letters to Zigrosser mention setting up a new studio, projects and work completed, and thoughts about suicide. The 1941 correspondence with Zigrosser is slimmer, but still quite personal and bearing a tone of resignation. Flannagan killed himself in his New York studio on January 6, 1942. Several folders of material follow the correspondence. Included are letters from various people involved with Flannagan, often resolving old conflicts. Not long after Flannagan's death, a Newsweek article characterized the Weyhe Gallery as profiteering from Flannagan during his lifetime. Letters between Erhard Weyhe, Laura Canadé and Carl Zigrosser record their initial dismay and defense of the Gallery's treatment of Flannagan. There are letters from researchers working on Flannagan. There is a folder of business receipts, a folder of clippings from magazines and newspapers, a folder of exhibition catalogs, a folder of comments and writings by Carl Zigrosser, and a folder of lists of Flannagan's sculptures.

Grace Flannagan was the wife of sculptor John Flannagan. Most of the letters date from the Flannagan's troubled stay in Ireland and Paris in 1930-1931. Cablegrams concern Grace Flannagan's departure sudden departure from France with her baby during one of her husband's drunks. There is another cablegram from Harry Gottlieb and Heinz Warneke arranging for Flannagan to leave Europe. The correspondence file for Heinz and Jessie Warneke in the Carl Zigrosser Papers also contain letters about the incident.

Flannagan, Margharita La Centra. Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1935-1962, n.d.
Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1935-1962, n.d.
Margharita La Centra was John Flannagan's common-law wife in the last years of his life (1935-1942). Their 1936 marriage was declared bigamous in a 1944 court decision. Her correspondence with Carl Zigrosser mostly concerns John Flannagan, their life together, his health and mental state, money trouble, the progress of his work, his hospitalizations for a broken leg and recurring brain tumors, and their plans for better times. Zigrosser was upset by Flannagan's alcoholism and unpredictable behavior, but stood by him when he could. Margharita Flannagan's letters are trusting and forthcoming. After 1937, Flannagan was, for the most part, unable to work due to his health problems. Margharita's letters continue to detail teaching prospects, Guggenheim applications, sales and complications with sales, Flannagan's attempts to work, his mental and physical situation, his 1942 suicide and her bereavement. After 1942, her correspondence involves Zigrosser in the process of publishing Flannagan's letters and preparing a memorial exhibit. There is a growing tone of resentment in her letters as the art world clamors over the artist in a way it never did while he was alive. Margharita's letters dwell on Flannagan's suffering at the end of his life and the prices he nearly gave his work away for. These letters alternate with others that speak passionately about Flannagan, his life and his spirit in her life. The later correspondence is sporadic, and mostly consists of friendly updates on her life, the lawsuit against her brought by Grace Flannagan (John Flannagan's legal wife), and promptings to Zigrosser to maintain their friendship. Some letters are addressed to Laura Canadé, an employee of Weyhe Gallery.

Title:
United States Sanitary Commission records. Army and Navy Claim Agency archives 1861-1870
The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.
