Title: Photographs, ca.1841.

This collection contains five cased photographs, including three daguerreotypes and two ambrotypes, all of which are portraits. Two of the daguerreotypes are in a case together and are identified as Governor Joshua Lanier and his wife Sarah Ann. These two photographs are badly faded but still distinguishable and are believed to be among the first daguerreotypes ever taken in the Southeast. They were taken in Tuscaloosa, Ala., ca.1841, by Dr. William H. Harrington who worked with Frederick Augustus Porter Barnard. These two gentlemen started the first known southern photographic gallery in Tuscaloosa on 1841 Oct. 9. The third daguerreotype is in a case without a cover and is of an unidentified young man. The photograph itself is in good condition and clearly visible, it even appears to have some tint to the cheeks and lips. The two remaining photographs are ambrotypes that are unidentified, but which appear to be portraits of Sarah Ann Martin.

Title: Militia files, 1847-1849.

The governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the administering of decisions and actions relating to military affairs and the maintenance of the state militia. This series contains letters, vouchers, reports, and petitions relating to the militia and military affairs. It consists primarily of correspondence relating to the Mexican War which ended in 1848 Feb. There is considerable correspondence from John J. Seibels and Blanton McAlpin in Mobile regarding the formation of the 5th Company of the Alabama Battalion. The acquisition and presentation of a flag for the battalion figures prominently in several of these letters. Letters from and about James M. Gee's company in Mexico are present as well. The formation of other companies to fight in Mexico or to help quell Indian hostilities in Florida is also mentioned in the records. The series contains correspondence between Adjutant and Inspector General J. G. Carroll and Gov. Chapman that discusses, among other topics, revising the military code. Chapman also corresponded with Col. C. B. Harrison of the Quartermaster General's office regarding ordnances and supplies for the troops. Also present among the records is a lengthy letter dated 1848 June 20 from James J. Gillan in Mexico to Mathew P. Blue of Montgomery discussing events in Mexico and his family. Other correspondents include Gov. Joshua L. Martin, Thomas C. McCoy, T. L. Toulmin, Secretary of War W. L. Marcy, and Chapman's private secretary, Elmore J. Fitzpatrick.

Title: Militia files, 1846-1847.

The governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the administering of decisions and actions relating to military affairs and the maintenance of the state militia. This series contains letters, reports, muster rolls, and military orders relating to the militia and military affairs. Topics often discussed include equipment and supplies, formation of companies, election of officers, and troop movements. The muster rolls list the names of the men enlisted in the various county and independent companies. Included are the muster rolls of Sydenham Moore, Captain of the Eutaw Rangers, and John A. Winston, Captain of the Sumter County Volunteers. In 1846 May, President Polk requested volunteers from every state to fight the Mexicans in Texas. As a result of this request, militia units began to correspond with Governor Martin concerning their state of readiness. These letters usually contain the number of troops available and the names of their officers. Included in this correspondence are letters from Major General Joseph Bates, commander of the Sixth Division of Alabama militia; Brigadier General Walter Smith, commander of the 1st Alabama Volunteer Regiment; and Major John J. Seibles, commander of the 1st Battalion of Alabama Volunteers. Also included in this series is correspondence with William L Marcy, Secretary of War.

Title: Incoming letters, 1847-1860.

This series functioned to document the recording duties and other functions of the Secretary of State. Besides letters, this series also contains extraditions, handbills, petitions, and receipts. Subjects discussed include the awarding of commissions of various types, particularly land commissioners and notary publics, the creation of new electoral beats, the formation of new counties, the Alabama-Florida boundary, state tax assessments, bids for printing public documents, the cost of improving the Capitol grounds in Tuscaloosa in the late 1840s, land ownership, the crime of stealing slaves, corporation charters, taking the census, Michael Tuomey's work on a geological survey, the incorporation of the Masonic Female College in Auburn in 1852, temperance, militia units, James H. Weaver's 1857 campaign to be re-elected Secretary of State, and railroads, particularly the Northeast and Southwest Alabama Railroad.

Title: Correspondence, 1821-1865.

This series consists of letterbooks containing copies of letters to and from the Governor, 1821-1849, 1861-1865. Most of the copies are of outgoing letters, though some incoming letters are also included. Some of the letters are routine in nature and may have been written for the Governor by the Secretary of State. Many of the letters concern important administrative decisions or express the opinion of the Governor on controversial subjects. Included are letters of Governors Pickens, G. Moore, S. Moore, Murphy, Gayle, Clay, Bagby, Fitzpatrick, Martin, Chapman, Shorter and Watts. Topics discussed include slavery, public lands, banks and banking, the militia, Indian affairs, internal improvements, surveys of boundary lines with Ga. and Fla., social welfare, state finances, the 1840s war with Mexico and the Civil War. Of particular interest are Gov. Gabriel Moore's views on prison reform, Gov. Gayle's position on the removal of white settlers from Creek Indian lands in 1833, the removal of the Cherokee Indians from the state, Ala.'s participation in the Mexican War, and the Civil War. The bulk of the Governors' incoming correspondence is described in the various series of each Governor's administration. The 1861 Dec. 5-1863 May 12 letters are indexed alphabetically by correspondent's name.

Title: Pardons, paroles, and clemency files, 1845-1847.

The governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the pardoning of individuals convicted or fined in all criminal and penal cases, except those of treason and impeachment. This series contains letters, petitions, affidavits, and other supporting legal documents relating to pardons from crimes, parole from sentences, and remission of fines imposed. Most items give details of the crime, and of the criminal's background and family life. The crimes committed include murder, rape, larceny, and gambling. The most prominent case in this series involved a slave named Smith who was owned by Lucius Saffold of Dallas County. Smith was convicted and sentenced to hang for the murder of another slave, Edmund. There are numerous petitions and correspondence requesting a pardon for Smith because (1) the conviction was based on circumstantial evidence, and (2) another slave, who was executed for the murder, exonerated Smith prior to his death. Other prominent cases for which pardons were requested include Charles S. Hawkins of Lowndes County who was convicted for assault with intent to murder Reuben Harrison, and Thomas Hart of Morgan County who was convicted for the murder of James B. Wilhite.

The governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the administering of executive decisions and actions. This series consists of the administrative files of Governor Joshua L. Martin and contains correspondence, reports, petitions, and copies of laws and resolutions. Some of the prominent topics discussed in the series include funds to which Alabama was entitled that were collected by the federal government from the sale of public land, the state bank in Mobile, and conditions at the state penitentiary. Among the items relating to the state penitentiary is a report on the prisoners that gives the name, age, and height of the prisoner, place of birth, the crime committed, the convict's former occupation, the county in which the conviction occurred, and remarks on the prisoner's behavior. There is also a letter from physician James C. Harris to the prison officials about health conditions at the state penitentiary. At a more specific level, the series contains a report by Thomas Billingsley on the navigability of the Cahaba River and the effectiveness of the Cahaba Navigation Company's attempts to maintain the river; applications from Lawrence County for licenses to sell spirituous liquors; an undated, partial draft of a speech to be delivered to the state legislature; a letter dated 1847 May 7 from John LaTourrette enclosing a map of Mexico showing battles and troop movements; and personal correspondence with E. L. Andrews regarding the marketing of Martin's cotton crop. Other correspondents include: James G. Lyon, James E. Sanders, Arthur P. Bagby, and George S. Houston.

The governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the extraditing of criminals. This process may also be referred to as requisition and involves either a request from the Governor of Alabama for the return of criminals who have escaped to other states or a request to the Governor of Alabama for the extradition of criminals found in Alabama. This series consists of correspondence, petitions, and legal documents that give details of the crime, the criminal, and the circumstances of the extradition/requisition request. Murder or larceny were the crimes most often committed by the fugitives. The requests are to or from the governors of Mississippi, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and Tennessee. The case involving Bryan Hines and Charles G. Pilcher is particularly unique. In 1845 the state bank in Tuscaloosa foreclosed on the property of Bryan Hines of Greene County after he failed to pay a $72,000 deed of trust. The bank discovered, however, that Hines had taken all of his transportable property (including slaves) and fled the state. Seeking the reward offered for Hines' arrest, Charles G. Pilcher pursued Hines and brought him back from Florida where he swore out a warrant for Pilcher's arrest to prevent him from testifying at Hines' trial. This action resulted in a requisition from Florida's governor to Gov. Joshua L. Martin who in turn issued a warrant for Pilcher's arrest. Although officials in Alabama brought the circumstances of the case to the attention of Martin and the Florida governor, the ploy succeeded in preventing Pilcher from testifying and Hines' case was postponed. With the election of Gov. Chapman as well as a change of administration in Florida, Hines repeated his action with the same results. The series contains considerable correspondence to Chapman regarding the circumstances of Hines' case. Another noteworthy request involves on extradition from Gov. George W. Towns of Georgia for the return of William G. Perryman who was charged with grand larceny for the 1847 theft of a negro woman, a horse, and a bale of cotton.

One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the appointing of individuals to various state and local offices and the signing of grants and commissions. This series consists of letters and petitions relating to appointments, resignations, commissions, and contested elections. Among the appointments referred to in the records are a request for the appointment of superintendent for the Cahawba Navigation Company; recommendations for individuals to serve as director of the state bank in Mobile, and the appointment of a Commissioner of Deeds for Alabama in South Carolina, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, and the District of Columbia. The series also contains several letters regarding the contested election of the clerk of county court in Mobile. Recommendations by Governor Arthur P. Bagby are also present.

The governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the rewarding of monetary prizes for the apprehension of persons charged with any capital offense who have escaped from prison, custody, or who have fled the state. This series consists of letters and petitions concerning rewards offered by the governor of Ala. for the apprehension of criminals. One example of the cases discussed in this series is a petition from the people of Butler County, requesting a reward for the arrest of James M. Coker. Coker was accused of committing a rape on Nancy Coleman. Following this action he fled the state. Citing this allegation, along with the fact that he was also wanted for the murder of an Autauga County man, the people requested that Governor Martin place a reward of $100 to $200 for the apprehension of Coker. In addition to the petition is a letter from Samuel J. Bolling recommending the reward be offered. Also found in this series is a letter from Thomas Mosley, sheriff of Madison County, requesting a reward be offered for the apprehension of Philip Pritchett. Pritchett was accused of murdering Henry Stammer in Madison County. Mosley's letter also contains a physical description of Pritchett.

Compiled by the Alabama Department of Archives and History, this collection consists of hundreds of cased photographs, including daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes. The majority are images of Alabama individuals, families, and Confederate soldiers. Some of the photographs are identified, but many are not. Identified individuals include Governor Joshua Lanier Martin and his wife Sarah Ann Martin; Governor David Peter Lewis; and Timpoochee Barnard, a member of the Uchee (Yuchi) people. There are also a few portraits of unidentified African Americans.

Title: Letters, 1836-1847.

Letters, 1836 Feb. 29 and 1847 May 7, both from LaTourrette in N.Y., N.Y. The first is to John Coffee, in Florence, Lauderdale Co., Ala., and the second is to Gov. Joshua Lanier Martin, in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa Co., Ala. Both letters concern maps of the state of Ala. In particular, LaTourrette was concerned with showing the best roads, hostelries, and eateries, as well as the location of all post offices and towns, and any changes in any of the above over the last few years. The second letter, a photocopy, is concerned with whether the state of Ala. received the map LaTourrette sent to its Secretary of State ca. 1845.

Letters, 1835-1852. The majority discuss Cunningham's service during the Mexican War. Cunningham wrote to Ala. Governor J. L. Martin offering the services of the Talladega Rangers in 1846. Later correspondence concerns Cunningham's illness and his doctor's medical recommendations. Also included are letters, ca.1850, from A. J. Liddell which discuss the Ala. legislature and politics.
