Title: Guide to the Max Shachtman Papers, 1917-1969

Max Shachtman was an author, editor, and a leader (successively) in the communist, Trotskyist, and socialist movements whose views helped shape the outlook of many progressive and liberal anti-communist intellectuals and labor leaders. Shachtman was a Polish-Jewish immigrant interested in socialist reform and the communist movement, but in 1928, was expelled from the Communist Party after adopting Trotsky's views. In 1929 he became a leader of the Communist League of America and lead a splinter group, the Workers Party (later the Independent Socialist League) who had differences with the party establishment's uncritical view of the Hitler-Stalin Pact of 1939. During the 1950s, Shachtman developed the political strategy known as 'realignment,' which held that U.S. socialists should ally themselves with the leadership of the labor movement and together work to make the Democratic Party into a social democratic party. During the 1960s, Shachtman began a history of the Communist International, which remained unfinished at his death in 1972. The papers include international organizational bulletins, correspondence, notes, clippings, cartoons, lithographs and manuscripts, documenting both his political and literary activities. Also included are research notes for his history of the Communist International, personal correspondence, an unpublished manuscript of Alfred Rosmer's memoirs of John Reed and a collection of German leaflets tracing the debate between the Nazis, the Communist Party, the Social Democrats and the German Trotskyists. Prominent correspondents include Norman Thomas, Natalia Sedova Trotsky, Erich Fromm, A.J. Muste and Max Eastman.

In addition to much material on Susan's family life and life as a student, the papers contain references to the Chicago literary world, in which Susan and her husband Llewellyn socialized with Harriet Monroe, Floyd Dell, John Cowper Powys, Edgar Lee Masters, Carl Sandburg, and Mark Turbyfill. The correspondence is arranged into personal correspondence, business correspondence, and personal business correspondence. Principal correspondents include Katherine Lee Bates, and cousins Edward Brigham, E. P. Warren, and Cornelia Warren. Also included is a letter from her mentally ill aunt Susan Rice, and a letter from Gyp Taylor discussing life in Paris in 1932 mentioning Gertrude Stein, Natalie Barney, William Seabrook, and Ford Madox Ford. The diaries are dated 1912, 1914-16, 1918-1919, 1921-1924. Writings include "Saint Nicholas Eve" and an incomplete essay entitled "Floyd and Margery Dell Throw a Party!". Other Papers include Isaac Levine's printed poem "The Queen of Elfland's Daughter (A Moon Fantasy)" inscribed to Susan and Llewellyn.

The collection is almost entirely correspondence, with a small number of photos of Goldman, Malmed, and Alexander Berkman, printed ephemera, and writings of Goldman and others. There are more than 450 letters, postcards and telegrams from Goldman to Malmed, 1900-1939, many including carbon copies of correspondence between Goldman and others. Others corresponding with Malmed include Berkman, Stella Comyn, and Warren Starr Van Valkenburgh. Also included are letters from Goldman and Berkman to Nunia Seldes, from Goldman to Ben Reitman, and letters to Malmed from other anarchist friends, including Osias Leibovitz. Only 3 letters by Malmed are in the collection. The papers provide information about Goldman, her family, her life and involvement in the anarchist movement, her lecture tours in the U.S. and other countries, her experience in the Soviet Union, her books, her friends and colleagues, her loneliness and frustration after being deported, her attitude toward love, friendship and marriage, the atmosphere in Europe before World War II, and the Spanish Civil War. There is some information about Malmed, his family and his business ventures as well as Goldman's opinions about success in the business world.

Papers of the General secretary of the Communist Party of the United States from 1930 through its dissolution in 1944. When the Party was reconstituted as the Communist Political Association later that year, Browder was chosen as its President, however he was expelled in 1946 following a debate over Party leadership. Following his expulsion, Browder lectured and wrote about Marxism and represented Soviet writers and publishers for publication in the United States. Collection incluces correspondence/subject files (1879-1970) relating to Marxist philosophy, the workings of the C.P.U.S.A., Browder's role within the Party and to Browder's business ventures as well as legal files (1938-1958); manuscripts (1924-1967) of Browder and others, including Browder's manuscripts for articles, books, memoranda, news releases, pamphlets, reports, and speeches; and memorabilia including personal files and photographs of Browder and his family, and some colleagues.
