The noted jurist, judge, and legal writer William Blackstone established the study of England's common law as an accepted academic discipline, and his Oxford lectures were published in 1765-1769 as the famous and influential Commentaries on the Laws of England. In the years since then, in numerous editions and translations, this work provided the definitive account of the state of English law in the mid-18th century.
English jurist.
Blackstone, English jurist, was the author of the Commentaries on the Laws of England (1765-1769). Seymour Richmond was his uncle. (Cf. Lewis C. Warden, "The Life of Blackstone" (Charlottesville, Virginia: Michie, 1938) p. 109.

Title:
An account of the many fine seats of noblemen etc. I have seen with other observations made during my residence in [southern] England [manuscript], 1763 December 23.
The record of a trip which the writer began on October 27, 1762, when he sailed from Dublin with his parents. He spent much of his time in Oxford and was presented with a degree ad eundem in order to hear the lectures of Blackstone. He passed through Stratford-upon-Avon and in London saw Garrick in the role of Abel Drugger and of Lear (p. 36). He describes in some detail the landscaping of the country houses he saw and occasionally adds an illustration. On p. 19 he refers to a line of poetry as by his [great] uncle [Thomas Parnell], hence the attribution of this work to Sir John. The narrative breaks off abruptly.

Pintard, John, 1759-1844. John Pintard papers, 1779-1880.
Title:
John Pintard papers, 1779-1880.
Papers and correspondence, 1779-1880. Pintard's correspondence, 1780-1840, deals with such matters as his business activities, his financial difficulties and bankruptcy in the 1790s, the election of 1812, politics throughout the period, family matters, death or illness of friends, and his interest in various academic, cultural, philanthropic, and religious organizations. Some of his more frequent correspondents were John Wakefield Francis, Walter Livingston, De Witt Clinton, James Henry Clinton (serving aboard U.S.S. Constellation), Dr. Richard Davidson of New Orleans and other members of the Davidson family, Samuel Bayard of Princeton (N.J.), Fitch Hall of Boston, Elias Boudinot, Samuel Farmar Jarvis, and Lewis Pintard. There is also a large group of letters to his daughter, Eliza Noel Pintard (Mrs. Richard Davidson), of Pinckneyville, Mississippi Territory, and New Orleans, 1816-1833. The collection contains a diary of New York weather kept in 1779, and nine other diaries kept at various times between 1783 and 1807, including a diary of his reading while in debtors' prison. Some of the other material relates to Pintard's own interests, some to the affairs of various organizations in which he was active. It includes two commonplace books; an analysis of Blackstone's Commentaries, written by Pintard in 1799; reminiscences of his early life, probably either dictated to his daughter Louise Servoss or copied by her; notes on the Mississippi River and New Orleans, dated 1801; a manuscript article on the trade of New Orleans; a scrapbook of clippings, manuscripts and a broadside about the Erie Canal celebration in 1823; and miscellaneous papers. The material related to organizations includes indexes to volumes 10, 14 and 15 of the manuscript minutes of the Common Council of the City of New York (1790-1793, 1803-1804, and 1804-1806); papers pertaining to the financial affairs of the New-York Historical Society, ca. 1809-1828, and corrrespondence and papers about the Jacob Serred legacy to the General Theological Seminary, including Pintard's account of his involvement in the rise and progress of the seminary. There is also a large group of papers related to Pintard's son in law, Thomas L. Servoss, and his family, much of it correspondence, 1850-1880, about the family's claim under the French spoliation claims.

Blackstone, William, Sir, 1723-1780. An Abridgement of Architecture, 1743.
Title:
An Abridgement of Architecture, 1743.
The manuscript is an attempt by the youthful Blackstone to summarize all knowledge about architecture. The title page notes that his work is extracted chiefly from treatises by Henry Wotton, Roland Fréart, John Evelyn, James Gibbs and William Chambers. The text is divided systematically into 37 chapters, the relationship of each to all the others being shown in a diagram, "Analysis of the Abridgement," following the title page. This manuscript appears to represent a first complete draft (with numerous insertions and deletions). A fuller version of the study entitled "Elements of Architecture" (and dating from ca. 1747) exists in the Codrington Library, All Souls College, Oxford, mss. 333. In both cases, the scope and organization closely parallel the methods Blackstone employed in his later "Commentaries on the Laws of England." Included is a complete typescript of the text (dated 1910, apparently one of two made), commissioned by Archie Kirkman Lloyd, a previous owner of the manuscript. A folder contains research and provenance notes written by A.K. Lloyd's son, R.A. Lloyd, a page from a journal which mentions the sale of the Blackstone manuscript, receipts dated 1904 from the bookseller who sold the manuscript, and a printed portrait of Blackstone.
