Trained under J.F. Blondel at the Ecole des Arts in Paris, Sir William Chambers served as the Architect of the King's Works and Surveyor-General and Comptroller under King George III. His works included the remodeling at Buckingham Palace, and his principal work Somerset House, among others. Influential through his publications, most notably Treatise on Civil Architecture of 1759-91, Chambers additionally was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Art, serving as its first treasurer.

Cavaliere Gaudenzio Honorati's life-span covered most of the 18th century; he was still active in 1797. His residence was in Iesi (Marche), where two centuries later the Honorati marquesses still inhabited the Palazzo Honorati. Architecture was his lifelong passion. However he must not have been a professional architect, because he never mentioned in his writings any personal contribution to that art.
