Nationalism, gender and hybridity in Spenser, Yeats and Heaney
Title:
Nationalism, gender and hybridity in Spenser, Yeats and Heaney
This thesis explores the development and interrelationships of nationalism and gender between Ireland and England from postcolonial and feminist viewpoints in the works of Edmund Spenser (1552?-1599), William B. Yeats (1865-1939) and Seamus Heaney (1939-). Spenser's The Faerie Queene and A View of the Presente State of Irelande exhibit the development of English "self-fashioning" against or "contrary" to an Irish "other." The works of Yeats and Heaney illustrate the postcolonial effort to re-constitute or re-fashion an Irish "self" against an English "other." Nationalism and myth are reciprocally linked to the repression and feminization of the "other." These concepts are used not only by the patriarchal colonizer to subject the colonial abroad and the women at home but by the postcolonial subject to reconstitute the "self" in a new form against the contrary of some new "other."

Tragedie called Oedipus, [circa 1596-1603].
Title:
Tragedie called Oedipus, [circa 1596-1603].
Manuscript on paper, in a single secretary hand, corrected, containing the text of a school drama on the life of Oedipus. The text, mainly in fourteener couplets, draws heavily on Alexander Neville's verse translation of Seneca's Oedipus (1581), and also contains extracts from Thomas Newton's Thebais (1581). The original scenes show the influence of other contemporary verse, including Lyly's Euphues and the fifth book of Spenser's Faerie Queene (1596). The work was apparently intended for performance by the pupils of a grammar school, probably the Royal Free Grammar School at Newcastle upon Tyne. The final two leaves of the volume contain "A speach deliverd before the founders at the entrance of the schole," in the same hand. The speech refers to the Selby family (George Selby was elected Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1600).

Title:
[Collection of political and religious tracts], [ca. 1604].
Manuscript on paper, in several secretary hands, with titles in Italic, of a variety of political and religious texts, most concerned with the governance of Ireland, the proposed union of England and Wales with Scotland, and the controversy over the retention of most "ceremonies" in the Book of Common Prayer by the Hampton Court Conference (1604). About two-thirds of the volume is devoted to "A Veiwe of the presente state of Ireland discoursed by way of a Dialogue betweene Eudoxus and Irenius." This is a complete text of Edmund Spenser's View of the State of Ireland (1596). The title is preceded by an attribution note: "This booke heere followinge (called A Viewe of the present state of Ireland) was made by Mr. Spencer, in the tyme that Sir William Russell Knight was lord deputie of Irelande Anno Domini."

Helsby, Mary, 17th cent. Autograph letters signed from Mary Helsby to various recipients [manuscript], 1651-1668.
Title:
Autograph letters signed from Mary Helsby to various recipients [manuscript], 1651-1668.
Includes ten letters (1-10) and thirteen ca. 1900 clippings (11-23). The letters include 4 autograph letters signed to Randolph Helsby, 1653-1668 (3-7), and 2 autograph letters signed from him to her, 1653-1654 (9-10), nearly all written before their marriage in 1655. Other correspondents include her father Peter Hatton (1-2) and her friend Lady (Joan?) Smythe (of Hill Hall in Theydon Mount?), Essex (8). Written from: Quisty (also Kisstie)-Birches in Hatton, Helsby and Brooke House in Kingsley, Cheshire; Chigwell, Essex; Bath and London. She comments on a book of poetry of Mr. Spencer (Edmund Spenser?) Randolph had given her (4) and on a romantic story (6). He tells her of a gay party on the Thames with singing of madrigals in 1654 (10) and reminds her of one lady's feet "like Chris Dixon's in the show from Leeds" (10). They were both critical of and sympathetic to the Roundheads and Royalists: in her letter of September 10, 1653 she pleads with him not to get entangled in a conspiracy that seems to have been afoot to overthrow "Oliver" (3) and in her letter of March 27, 1654 she repeats an anecdote about Cromwell (4). She writes to her father on May 1, 1660, that some fear "the manners of the new court will be full of the outlandish breeding of so many in foreign parts for all these years among popish people" (1). Her letter to Lady Smith (Smythe), written from Bath, describes that city (8). In all her letters she shows she has an eye for the scenes around her.
