This collection contains one folder of miscellaneous papers, 1857-1884, including a report on relief of the sick, 1857; correspondence to Joseph Sargent and Oliver Hurd Everett; and copies of bylaws and orders of proceedings of meetings. There are three boxes of lecutre transcripts on various medical subjects. This collection spans four generations of the Gage family of Bethel and Waterford, Me., and Worcester, Mass. The boxes contain family correspondence, speeches, essays, poetry, legal and miscellaneous, printed material, and genealogical and biographical information. Among the family correspondence are several extraordinary groups of letters of Anne Sargent Gage, her uncle, Lucius Manlius Sargent (1786-1867), her adoptive aunt, Mary Moody Emerson (1774-1863), and her friend, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody (1804-1894), the Transcendentalist teacher, author, and educational reformer. The letters of Lucius Manlius Sargent illuminate the relationship of Anne Sargent Gage with her natural father, Daniel Sargent, who, upon his remarriage in 1802, changed his daughter's surname to Brewer, sent her to Waterford to be reared by the Lincoln Ripleys, and ceased communicating with her. In 1854, Mrs. Gage sought to learn more about her past and initiated a correspondence with her uncle, who encouraged her to seek financial assistance from Daniel Sargent's legatees. The folders containing Anne Sargent Gage's correspondence concern her close relationship with her children and adoptive parents, for the most part, but there are a few letters written by her to Lucius Manlius Sargent concerning Daniel Sargent. The letters of Mary Moody Emerson, a noted New England intellectual, refer to her religious convictions, her infirmities, family matters (e.g., her nephew, Ralph Waldo Emerson), books that she read, and her attitude toward the War of 1812 and abolitionism. There are also references to Anne Sargent Gage's ancestry. The letters of Elizabeth Palmer Peabody provide a fascinating look at contemporary attitudes toward slavery, abolitionism, and social scandals in Boston. She make references to the views of her two brothers-in-law, Horace Mann (1796-1859) and Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864), as well as Wendell Phillips (1811-1884). The boxes of family correspondence also include letters of Anne Gage's cousin, Daniel Farnham ( - ), concerning family matters and his religious views; professional and family correspondence of Dr. Leander Gage, including letters from his patients and friends; and the correspondence of his children: Thomas Hovey Gage (who wrote to his children, and to his wife, Anna Maria Lane Gage, during his Civil War service as a surgeon); Anna Maria Lane Gage (who wrote to her children while they were in school, especially at Harvard College); Frances Gage Cousens; and Phebe Hovey Gage. There are also diaries of Frances Gage Cousens and Phebe Hovey Gage. There is correspondence of Dr. Homer Gage, Thomas Hovey Gage, Jr., and Mabel Carleton Gage. The brothers corresponded with each other, their parents, and with friends. Thomas Hovey Gage, Jr., also maintained an extensive correspondence concerning the family's genealogy, while Homer Gage wrote of his studies at Harvard. Mabel Carleton Gage also wrote to her brothers and corresponded, during the period 1936 to 1941, with Grace Morrison Boynton (1890- ) of Yenching University in China, who wrote of Chinese gardens in Peking and the political situation in that country. There is general family correspondence, including letters of Amos Gage, his wife, Louis Hovey Gage, and his brother, Abel Gage (1755- ), as well as a letter of Frances Cousens Gage (1863-1917). She was the oldest child of George Manlius and Elizabeth S. (Webber) Gage and a missionary who wrote of political and social conditions in Marsovan, Turkey in 1914. Also of interest are typescript copies of many letters, dated 1849 to 1851, written by Joel Holkins to his wife, Lois Gage Holkins, a niece of Dr. Leander Gage. Holkins wrote in detail of his many fascinating experiences after he sailed to California to join the other Forty-Niners in their search for wealth. The remainder of the collection includes family legal documents, speeches and addresses, poetry of Anne Sargent Gage and other, miscellaneous documents, graphic and printed materials, and extensive genealogical and biographical data, including a genealogical account of Anne Sargent Gage, written by her son, Thomas Hovey.

Washburn, John D. (John Davis), 1833-1903. Correspondence, 1878-1886.

Title: Correspondence, 1878-1886.

Most of the letters in this collection were written to Worcester doctor Thomas Hovey Gage (1826-1909) who was the personal physician of John Washburn. The letters pertain to Washburn's recurring bouts of mental illness. The earliest letters were written by Washburn's wife, briefly describing her husband's condition and asking for advice. Evidently Gage prescribed long trips as therapy and there are several letters pertaining to a trip, 1878-1879, to Havana which Washburn undertook escorted by several friends. The letters dating from April through June 1884 were written by Dr. Lemuel Fox Woodward (1857-1931) of Worcester who supervised a similar trip for Washburn to California. Washburn and Gage served as trustees of the Worcester Lunatic Hospital and there is some correspondence from Washburn to Gage pertaining to hospital business. There are also a few letters written to Stephen Salisbur (1835-1905), who was a good friend of Washburn, and there is a small envelope of 1878 newsclippings announcing Washburn's illness and departure for Havana.

This collection is a compilation of Park's extensive correspondence, for the period 1910 to 1924, with museum directors, portrait owners, authors, publishers, photographers, art connoisseurs, and a variety of scholarly institutions concerning his work in the field of colonial art. Included are letters on the value of specific works, letters with detailed descriptions of portraits, letters on the compilation of photographs of old Worcester views (with which Park became involved in 1924), letters on the advisability of unearthing the old gravestones on Worcester's common. There are also many photographs of portraits collected by Park and by Clarence Saunders Brigham (1877-1963).

Gage family. Additional papers (Series II), 1813-1917.

Title: Additional papers (Series II), 1813-1917.

This collection consists mostly of family letters of Anne Sargent Gage, her husband, and their children. The family lived in Waterford, Me., and several members later lived in Worcester, Mass. Much of the correspondence is between Ann Sargent Gage and her children. The papers of Dr. Leander Gage include school exercises and medical notes, 1815-1828, as well as general and professional correspondence, 1813-1840. There is a folder of correspondence between Leander and Anne Sargent at the time of their courtship, 1819-1820. The correspondence from the 1830s includes numerous letters to and from Rowena Coffin Whitman while she was living in Concord, N.H. Many letters from Concord in this period are partly written by Gage daughters. Much of the correspondence from the 1840's is between Gage and Whitman families while the Whitmans were residing in Washington, D.C. There is a folder of school exercises, lectures, poetry, etc. undated and 1835-1856, of Phebe Hovey Gage. In the general correspondence are numerous letters to Phebe after she was committed to the Lunatic Asylum in Augusta in 1856. In 1850 Frances married Humphrey Cousens and afterwards lived in Gorham, Me. She wrote many letters in the 1850s and 1860s to her mother and sisters. More than one hundred lengthy letters from Mary Sargent Gage to her sisters detail her stay in Europe from 1885-1888. In this period, Mary lived in Kassel, Germany; Geneva, Switzerland; and France, evidently working as a governess for an American family. Separate folders include letters from Abel Gage to the Gages in Waterford, and letters written in Bath, Me., by Thomas Hovey Gage (1789-1823) and his wife Frances between 1816 and 1827. There are also two folders of letters written by Joel Holkins and Lois Gage Holkins from 1831 to 1850. The two octavo volumes were written by Anne Sargent Gage's daughters. One is a commonplace book, primarily of poetry, kept by Frances Gage between 1839 and about 1893. The other is a diary kept by Ann Louisa Gage while teaching school in Newton Center, Mass., in 1849 and 1850. There are also a few financial records in the collection. Included are IOUs of people owing money to Dr. Leander Gage or Anne Sargent Gage in the period 1817-1853, and a small group of receipts dated 1830-1845. Anne Sargent Gage's indebtedness in the years after her husband's death is documented by her accounts in the years 1848-1853 with Oliver Porter, a Waterford merchant who subsequently owned the Gage house.
