The seaport of Hull was an important 17th century English bulwark against naval attack or incursions of Scottish armies. After Hull turned against Charles I in 1640, the King twice (without success) beseiged the town in 1642, the likely year of issue of the present print. Cf. Parry.
Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) set the standard of artistic and technical achievement that many later engravers attempted to emulate. In every area Hollar's work stands out as a source of information on common life in 17th century Europe. It ranges from topography and landscapes, to depictions of local dress from a variety of regions. Born in Prague, he lived and worked in London, where his views of the city form an invaluable record of its appearance before the Great Fire of 1666.

Churchill, Sidney John Alexander, 1862-1921. Sidney John Alexander Churchill papers 1473-1946.
Title:
Sidney John Alexander Churchill papers 1473-1946.
Papers, prints and drawings acquired or generated by Churchill for his study of Italian decorative arts. The bulk of the collection consists of holographs pertaining to the work of Italian Renaissance and Baroque goldsmiths. Inventories of the estates of wealthy Italian personages and churches contain itemized lists of household effects and religious artifacts (16th-19th centuries; ca. 140 items). An assortment of official documents and financial accountings, such as contracts, statutes, lists of guild members and their activities, a digest of criminal law, papal bulls, sumptuary laws, a pawn shop register, expense reports, and receipts, record legal and fiscal affairs of goldsmiths, guilds and patrons (15th-19th centuries). Approximately 350 prints and drawings of goldsmith and jewelry designs, portraits, and religious and historical scenes were printed after well-known painters or are by influential printmakers and draughtsmen, including Jacques Callot, Wenceslaus Hollar, Marcantonio Raimondi, and Francesco Salviati. Also included are ca. 45 letters concerning the purchase and shipment of silver ornaments (18th century).

Damer, Anne Seymour, 1748 or 9-1828. Scrapbooks, [not after 1830].
Title:
Scrapbooks, [not after 1830].
Two scrapbooks containing a collection of mostly 18th century engravings and etchings, some of which are purported to have belonged to Horace Walpole, organized thematically. In addition there are four original drawings, including a watercolor and wash drawing of the Neapolitan painter Luca Jordano signed by J.B. Catenaro, an unsigned portrait in red crayon of Cornelius Jansen, a pencil portrait of an unknown woman, and another small pencil drawing of a landscape. The first volume contains etchings and engravings of English villages and rural scenes including the farm house and printing house at Strawberry Hill and two vignettes of Strawberry Hill; scenes in Surrey and Twickenham; etchings of Roman scenes; portraits of eminent historical and contemporary political figures. The second volume begins with a series of 192 small French engravings of women, which document the hair styles and hat fashions in the 17th and 18th centuries, all engraved by Dupin or Desrais. A second series of the 48 engravings from Wenceslaus Hollar's Theatrum mulierum depict the costumes of 17th century women (mostly) in Europe. These prints are followed by 29 of C. Heath's small engravings of prominent British politicians and writers of the 18th century. The final pages include several other miscellaneous portraits of contemporary British and French figures as well as the plates drawn and engraved by Henry Moses for A series of twenty-nine designs of modern costume published in London by E. and C. M'Lean in 1823.

Title:
Julius S. Held papers ca. 1918-1999
Research papers of Julius Samuel Held, American art historian renowned for his scholarship in 16th- and 17th-century Dutch and Flemish art, expert on Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and Rembrandt. The ca. 70 linear feet of material, dating from the mid-1920s to 1999, includes correspondence, research material for Held's writings and his teaching and lecturing activities, with extensive travel notes. Well documented is Held's advisory role in building the collection of the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico. A significant portion of the ca. 29 linear feet of study photographs documents Flemish and Dutch artists from the 15th to the 17th century.

Hollar, Wenceslaus, 1607-1677. Kyngeston vpon Hvll, [circa 1642, with manuscript revisions circa 1681].
Title:
Kyngeston vpon Hvll, [circa 1642, with manuscript revisions circa 1681].
Engraved aerial view of the city of Hull (circa 1642), with additions in pen and black ink. The engraved portion includes a bird's-eye view of the city, together with a view (across the top) of the city as seen from the Humber estuary, and a small inset map of the region surrounding Hull, including parts of Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire. Both views of Hull offer detailed depictions of city buildings, along with the two forts guarding the harbor and a number of ships on the Humber. The manuscript additions are made in pen and ink, probably by Sir Martin Beckman (d. 1702), the engineer in charge of the improvements at Hull in 1681-1682. The revisions are drawn directly on the sheet of paper to which the engraving is mounted; the lower portion of the engraving (not mounted) may be lifted up to reveal the proposed fortification changes underneath.
