Sidney John Alexander Churchill papers 1473-1946.

Papers, prints and drawings acquired or generated by Churchill for his study of Italian decorative arts. The bulk of the collection consists of holographs pertaining to the work of Italian Renaissance and Baroque goldsmiths. Inventories of the estates of wealthy Italian personages and churches contain itemized lists of household effects and religious artifacts (16th-19th centuries; ca. 140 items). An assortment of official documents and financial accountings, such as contracts, statutes, lists of guild members and their activities, a digest of criminal law, papal bulls, sumptuary laws, a pawn shop register, expense reports, and receipts, record legal and fiscal affairs of goldsmiths, guilds and patrons (15th-19th centuries). Approximately 350 prints and drawings of goldsmith and jewelry designs, portraits, and religious and historical scenes were printed after well-known painters or are by influential printmakers and draughtsmen, including Jacques Callot, Wenceslaus Hollar, Marcantonio Raimondi, and Francesco Salviati. Also included are ca. 45 letters concerning the purchase and shipment of silver ornaments (18th century).
