Title: Papers, 1771-1922.

The personal correspondence relates to both personal and business matters. Prior to E. I. du Pont's arrival in America in 1800 it includes letters concerning the career of his father and brother. After 1800, much of it concerns the founding and operation of the powder mills on the Brandywine. There are references to French and American politics, as well as to Thomas Jefferson's criticism of Napoleon in 1812, and the visit of Lafayette to the United States in 1824. The papers of Madame du Pont consist for the most part of family correspondence.

The records consist of John Nicholson's private papers which were seized by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania around 1800 in order to prosecute its claims against his estate and unravel the many difficult title conflicts involving his vast land holdings.
