Clarence Pickett (1884-1965) was a prominent Friend. The executive secretary of the American Friends Service Committee from 1929 to 1950, he was influential in governmental and international circles as well. He served as an advisor to Presidents Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy. Eleanor Roosevelt once said that she would "always try to do the things Clarence asks because I have great trust in his judgment."
Stephen G. Cary (1915-2002) graduated from Germantown Friends School in 1933. He received a bachelor's degree in economics with a minor in chemistry from Haverford in 1937 and a master's in international administration from Columbia University in 1943. He was a conscientious objector during World War II and served in the Civilian Public Service from 1942-1946. Between 1946 and 1969, Cary was an integral part of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). With Willis Weatherford, he served as chief of American Quaker Relief Operations in Europe from 1946-1948, overseeing work in 10 countries dealing with the aftermath of World War II. Cary was chairman of the AFSC from 1979-1991. Cary began his service to Haverford College as a member of the Board of Managers from 1955-1969. In 1969 he joined the staff as vice president of development, and became vice president of finance and development in 1974. He was named acting president of Haverford from 1977-1978. Brown, H. Tatnall (Henry Tatnall), 1900-. Gilbert MacMaster papers, 1901-1968.
Title:
Gilbert MacMaster papers, 1901-1968.
These papers, which are closely related to the Archives of the American Friends Service Committee, consist of letters (both autograph and typed, mostly signed), diaries, passports, clippings, photographs, etc. Especially important is the diary of Gilbert MacMaster's life, covering his and his wife's 30 years of service, 1920-1950, with the A.F.S.C. child feeding mission in Germany, after World War I, as head of the Friends Center in Hamburg, during Hitler's rise to power, and as American Friends' representative in Basel, Switzerland, during World War II and later. His correspondence with A.F.S.C. officials, 1918-1967, and with individual Friends, notably Clarence E. Pickett (l884-1965), Margaret E. Jones, Henry Tatnall Brown (1871-1938), Alfred G. Scattergood (1878-1954) and Douglas V. Steere (1901-1995) parallels and amplifies his record of the events of these years. Taken together the papers form an unusually vivid account of the upheavals in Europe from the point of view of a private citizen, both as observer and as participant. The fourth box contains MacMaster's correspondence with William Maul Measey, 1950-1964. Written on many topics, Measey's letters are often commentary and criticisms of some people teaching or working at Haverford College and the American Friends Service Committee and his trust fund, while MacMaster's letters are more general commentary on daily life.

Title:
New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers 1823-1999
Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.
