Correspondence (chiefly letters received), articles, poems, speeches, book reviews, diaries and journals, miscellaneous notebooks, scrapbooks, clippings, and other printed material. Correspondence concerns Thayer's writings, particularly in the area of Italian history, and his connections with Harvard as editor of the Harvard Graduates' Magazine and later as an overseer. Also included are some miscellaneous papers of William Warland Clapp, a Boston journalist; and some papers of Thomas Wentworth Higginson, chiefly from a European trip made by Higginson in 1872.

Says that Edna St. Vincent Millay and Prof. Raymond Weeks of Columbia University spoke very favorably about the Markham's; was apponted to lecture on modern poetry at Columbia by Prof. Weeks; offers to have Virgil come to Columbia Univ. and could share his quarters with him.

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

The collection contains a poem, "To the Mountain," n.d.; and a newsletter of the Poetry Society of America, 1918, noting among other items, a reading by Bynner, activities of Edna St. Vincent Millay, World War I service of Raymond Weeks, William Aspenwall Bradley, Burton Egbert Stevenson, Curtis Wheeler, and Joyce Kilmer, and a hoax perpretrated by Bynner and Arthur Davidson Ficke. In letters to Grace Walcott Hazard Conkling he compliments her on a poem and offers publishing advice noting that the firm of Small, Maynard & Company publishes only Ezra Pound, Madison Cawein and himself and suggesting she send her verse to Mitchell Kennerly. Letters to a Mr. and Mrs. Carruth discuss meeting with Stanford undergraduates and announce a poetry prize for undergraduates. Letters to Christian Herter concern submissions to the "Independent."
