Title: Louis Van Oeyen Collection 1902-1921

The collection is comprised of 124 glass plate negatives created by photo journalist Louis Van Oeyen. Subjects found in the collection include Cleveland, Ohio buildings; automobiles and automobile racing; and professional baseball. Prominent people pictured in the collection are Ohio politician Theodore E. Burton; brewer Adolph Busch; Ohio Governor Myron T. Herrick; Cleveland Mayor Tom Loftin Johnson; race car driver Barney Oldfield; industrialist John D. Rockefeller; Theodore Roosevelt; and automobile manufacturer Alexander Winton. Glass plate negatives of a letter from General William Tecumseh Sherman to General Ulysses S. Grant and a letter from President Abraham Lincoln to Mrs. Wall were presumably created in the time frame of the rest of the collection, though the original letters were written 1864-1865.

Family papers, 1820-1908 and undated, include: business correspondence, bills, receipts, and some estate records of Joseph A. Moross; receipts for "A Lucky Dog" theatre company of E.A. Moross, 1908; bills and business correspondence of Antoine Moross, 1820-1872; a certificate appointing Medoire Moross as a Second Lieutenant in the Michigan militia, Third Regiment, 1836; and a Probate Court paper appointing Thomas Victor Moross as the guardian of Rose Ann Moross, a mentally incompetent person, 1891. A folder of family biographical information is also included. Two oversized scrapbooks of newspaper clippings on automobile racing complete the collection. V. 1, 1906-1908, and V. 2, 1911. The scrapbooks document racing, drivers, Barney Oldfield, "Wild Bill" "the King of Speed" Bob Burman, and Dir. of Contests, E.A. [Ernest] Moross. Both scrapbooks are quite acidic. A letter-press book of business correspondence, 1884-1887, completes the collection.

Title: Packard Motor Car Company photograph collection, 1899-1958.

Photographs include car models 1899-1958, photos of accessories, interiors, hood ornaments, factories, trucks, buses, dealerships, and celebrities with Packards. Many of the publicity shots of car models were done locally at Belle Isle, Cranbrook, in front of homes in Grosse Pointe, and outside the Packard plant on E. Grand Boulevard. Of this collection, 2,932 images have been digitized and are available in the Making of Modern Michigan database.

Title: The earthquake story of Stanford University : photograph albums, 1906-1964.

Photographs taken by Carl Breer on the Stanford University campus and in San Francisco shortly after the April 1906 earthquake, accompanied by text written in 1963-64. Volume one depicts destruction on the Stanford campus, including Memorial Church, Memorial Arch, Encina Hall, the new Library and Gymnasium buildings, and the Aggasiz statue. Volume two records his trip into San Francisco with fellow student Ralph Hopkins; locations photographed there include Bernal Heights, intersection of Laguna and Market streets, Golden Gate park, Red Cross relief stations, and Stanyon Street. There are also photographs taken in 1946 of Breer and the steam car that he designed and built in 1901; other people in those photographs include race car driver Barney Oldfield and Chrysler engineers Owen Skelton and Fred Zeder.

The collection contains correspondence, engravings and photographs. Letters from various literary figures were written in response to requests for photographs to use for caricatures, or to praise his dust jacket designs. They are accompanied by 35 dry point caricatures of noted writers of the 1920s and two photographs of Hawkins. Correspondents include Robert Benchley, Sam Benfield, Margaret Waller Freeman Cabell, James Branch Cabell, Henry Seidel Canby, Helen Grace Carlisle, Malcolm Cowley, Edna Ferber, Ellen Glasgow, DuBose Heyward, Sidney R. Jacobs, Alfred A. Knopf, R. Ellsworth Larrson, Sinclair Lewis, Howard Lindsay, Anita Loos, Archibald MacLeish, H.L. Mencken, Harriet Monroe, Barney Oldfield, Robert Osborn, Julia Mood Peterkin, Samuel Putnam, Carl Sandburg, Evelyn Scott, Hilda Scott, William B. Seabrook, Eric Sevareid, Rex Stout, S.S. Van Dine, Irita Van Doren, Mark Van Doren, Esther Van Dresser, Lynd Ward and Isabel Wilder.
