Biographical History
English man of letters.
Isaac Disraeli, English writer. His volumes of biographical anecdotes, Curiosities of Literature (1791-1823), were highly popular throughout the 19th century. He is the father of Benjamin Disraeli, British prime minister and novelist.
Isaac Disraeli was an English author of Jewish heritage, and Benjamin Disraeli's father. He had some success publishing critical essays in periodicals, before creating a phenomenon with Curiosities of Literature, a series of monographs containing a miscellany of literary anecdotes that went through many printings. He had less luck with fiction, but his well-researched Commentary on the Life and Reign of Charles I earned him an honorary degree from Oxford.
