He has received numerous awards and honors during his career including the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995. In May 2006, he visited the University of Kentucky where he delivered that year's University Commencement Address and was presented with an honorary degree.

Seamus Heaney was born in April 1939 in County Derry, Northern Ireland. He studied at Queen's University, Belfast from 1957 until 1961 and afterwards lived in the city until he moved to teach in America and later to Dublin in 1972.
Heaney was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995 and the T.S. Eliot prize in 1996.
