Leopold was born in Burlington, Iowa and received a Master of Forestry degree from Yale University. In 1909 he joined the U.S. Forest Service and from 1914-1924 he supervised national forests in Arizona and New Mexico. He established the first wilderness area in the Gila National Forest, New Mexico and was a founder of The Wilderness Society. In 1933, he accepted the chair of Game Management at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he taught until his death on April 21, 1948.

Aldo Leopold was born in Burlington, Iowa on January 11, 1887. He went to Yale for their programs in Forestry. After graduating, he worked for the Forest Services where he was in charge of killing the predatory animals negatively impacting the local area. This brought about his research in environmental ethics. He was a professor at the University of Wisconsin. His works as an ecologist, forester and environmentalist were influential in the development of modern environmental ethics and the movement for wilderness conservation. His most well known work was A Sand County Almanac (1949).
