Gabrielson worked for the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey from 1915 to 1940, becoming Chief in 1934. In 1940, the Survey became the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Gabrielson served as director until 1946. From 1946 to 1970, he served as President of the Wildlife Management Institute, then as chairman of the Board from 1970 to 1977. He helped organize the World Wildlife Fund (U.S.) and served as a trustee for the World Wildlife Fund (International). Gabrielson died in 1977. Clinton Raymond "Pink" Gutermuth was Vice-President of the Wildlife Management Institute from 1965 to 1977.
