Iowa naturalist Frederic Leopold served in World War I from 1917-1919, then entered the family office furniture business (Leopold Desk Company) in Burlington, Iowa. Leopold was active in conservation efforts and wildlife ecology. In addition to developing a design for wood duck houses, Leopold was known for his studies and records of the nesting habits of wood ducks over a period of thirty-five years. He received encouragement in his early efforts from his older brother, Aldo Leopold. Frederic Leopold received an honorary doctor of science degree from Iowa Wesleyan College; the Iowa Wildlife Conservation Award in 1966; the Iowa Academy of Science Centennial Citation in 1975; and the Ducks Unlimited Conservation Service Award in 1981.
